Course Description

The UTRGV Language Institute is now offering adults instruction in the basic English skills required to function in society.  This course is for students who have not completed their education in their first language and want to learn or improve their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

* Until further notice, due to COVID-19 restrictions, in-class courses will be primarily offered online via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Blackboard. However, we will allow up to 6 participants in the classroom on a first-come, first-served basis. If you wish to secure your in-person seat, please email li@utrgv.edu as soon as you complete the registration for the course.

APPLICATION AND PAYMENT

  2. Process Payment for Placement Test (non-refundable).
  3. Process Tuition Payment

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Students must be 18 years or older and have completed high school or equivalent
  • US Citizens or Resident Aliens should bring their birth certificate, resident alien card or employment authorization letter.
  • International Students must apply for F-1 visa.

SESSION TRANSFERS

  • Transfers to another session are Not Allowed without prior approval from the LI Director or Associate Director. If a transfer is approved, a Transfer Fee will be charged.

REFUNDS

  • Refunds require 4-6 weeks to process.
  • Intensive Program Processing fee of $100 is non-refundable.
  • Late fees are non-refundable.
  • Will only be given two weeks before the starting date of the program. No Exceptions!
  • If a student cannot be placed in an existing level or if a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, a full refund will be given less a $100.00 processing fee.

MENINGITIS VACCINE

  • All new students under the age of 22 must submit evidence of receiving the meningitis vaccine or booster shot (administered within the past five years) or evidence of exemption before they can enroll. Students must provide proof of vaccination 10 days before the first day of the program

STUDENT VISA

  • The I-20 Form will be provided to eligible international students in order to apply for an F-1 visa at their nearest U.S. Consulate.

I-20 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Statement of account with sufficient funds to cover tuition, books, housing, and health insurance.
  • Copy of passport (must be valid for at least 6 months)

SEVIS FEE

  • The Department of Homeland Security requires all foreign students to pay a SEVIS fee of $350 (USD) either by mail or via Internet, and fill out a form I-901 before making an appointment at the American Consulate.

MEDICAL INSURANCE

  • The Board of Regents of The UT-System schools requires that all international students have medical insurance every session.  The Board of Regents has also granted an exception for Mexican Nationals attending the Language Institute.

  • Grammar
    • The LI teaches grammar as a foundation for communication.
  • Listening and Speaking
    • Conversation, discussion and structured listening practice help students gain confidence speaking and understanding English in everyday situations.
  • Reading and Writing
    • Students improve their ability to read and remember more.
  • Vocabulary and Idioms
    • The LI teaches students the words needed to communicate clearly. Learning idioms helps students express themselves naturally in English.
  • Student Grade Report
    • At the end of each term, the LI sends all students a final evaluation of their performance in the program.
  • Certificates
    • At the end of each session, students who successfully complete the requirements of the LI receive a Certificate of Participation.
