Install MATLABĀ® Licensed Software

Step 1: Request a MATLAB® License

  1. Log in to
  2. Click the ServiceNow icon under Applications.
  3. Click Service Request under Need new service?
  4. Fill in the required fields:
    • Short Description: MATLAB License
    • Service Requested Description: Need access to MATLAB License for a personal computer.
  5. Click Order Now.
    • NOTE: A MATLAB® Activation Key will be sent to your UTRGV email account from the IT Service Desk. Once you have received the Activation Key, you will need to link the activation key to a MathWorks® account. 

Step 2: Link MATLAB® License to a MathWorks® Account

  1. Create a MathWorks® account (if you don't already have one) using your UTRGV email account. Go to:
    • NOTE: If prompted, select your Country. 
  2. Enter your UTRGV email address
  3. Enter your Country/Region: United States.
  4. Select a reason for using the MathWorks® software (available choices bulleted below):
    • Commercial work (including research)
    • Government work (including research)
    • Personal, non-commercial projects
    • Teaching or research in school
    • Student use
  5. Select Yes or No for "Are you 13 years of age or older?"
  6. Click Create.
    • NOTE: You will need to verify your email address. 

Step 3: Verify Email Address

  1. Go to your UTRGV email inbox
  2. Locate the email sent from MathWorks®.
  3. Click on the link included in email. 
    • NOTE: You will need to finish creating your MathWorks® profile.

Step 4: Complete Your MathWorks® Profile

  1. Enter your First Name.
  2. Enter your Last Name.
  3. Enter your User ID.
    • NOTE: You cannot change your user ID after it has been created. 
  4. Enter your Password.
    • NOTE: DO NOT USE your UTRGV password.
  5. Re-enter your Password.
  6. Enter your Department
    • NOTE: For students, enter "Student" in the Department field. 
  7. Enter the Activation Key you received from the IT Service Desk in the field Associate your Account to a License.
  8. Click Create.  

Step 5: Log In to Your MathWorks® Account 

  1. Download, install, and activate MATLAB® software.
  2. Check your UTRGV email account and locate the email with the subject: Confirm MathWorks Account Information.
  3. Click on the link included in the email to login and confirm your account information is correct.
    • NOTE: You will be taken to your MathWorks® account page. 

Step 6: Download an Installer

  1. From your MathWorks® account page, click Download Products under Downloads.
  2. Click R2017a to download the latest software to your computer. 
  3. Select an installer based on your computer:
    • Linux (64-bit)
    • MAC OS X (Intel 64-bit)
    • Windows (64-bit). 

Step 7: Install and Activate

  1. Locate the installer you downloaded in a file browser. It should be located in the default download location, unless you specified another location. The name of the installer file is:
    • Windows: MATLAB<release>_win64.exe
    • Mac OS X: MATLAB<release>
    • Where <release> represents the release number.
  2. Start the installer:
    • Windows: Double-click the installer file you downloaded in the previous step. The Windows Self-Extractor will run and the installer will start.
    • Mac OS X: Double-click the installer file you downloaded in the previous step. This action extracts the files and creates another folder called MATLAB<release>_maci64, where <release> represents the release number. Inside this folder, double-click InstallForMacOSX to start the installer.
  3. Click Run.
    • NOTE: A dialogue box labeled WinZip Self-Extractor will begin unzipping the software.
  4. Click Yes when the User Account Control Dialogue box asks: Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your PC?
  5. In the MathWorks installer, select Log in with a MathWorks Account.
  6. Click Next
  7. Read MathWorks, Inc. Software License Agreement.
  8. Select Yes to accept the terms of the License Agreement.
  9. Click Next
  10. Enter your UTRGV email address associated with your license key in the email address field. 
  11. Enter the MathWorks password you created. 
  12. Keep the Select a License checkbox selected.
  13. Click Next.
  14. Choose an Installation Folder where you would like MATLAB® installed. 
  15. When prompted, select the License you want to use.
  16. Select the products you want to download.
  17. Click Next.
  18. Check the boxes where you want to add MATLAB® shortcuts.
    • Desktop
    • Programs folder in the Start menu
  19. Click Next.
  20. Verify that the information is correct on the Confirmation dialogue page.
  21. Click Install.
    • NOTE: The software will begin downloading to your computer. This may take between 20 to 45 minutes. Depending on the products you downloaded and installed, additional configuration steps may be required.
  22. Click the different links if additional steps are required.
  23. Click Next.
  24. Keep the Activate MATLAB® checkbox selected
  25. Click Next.
    • NOTE: You will not be able to use MATLAB until you activate it.
  26. Click Next again in the Activate MathWorks Software dialogue box.
  27. Verify the displayed user name is correct when asked to provide a user name. 
  28. Click Next.
  29. Confirm that the information is correct on the Confirm Selection screen.
  30. Click Confirm.
  31. Click Finish.  

MATLAB® is now ready to use.
