REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture)

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

We are pleased to announce the availability of REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) to enhance biomedical and health research initiatives at UTRGV. REDCap is a secure web application for managing research, including observational studies, clinical trials, and online surveys. The UTRGV IT Department implemented REDCap to provide a secure, centralized environment to document, store, manage, and analyze research data. It is highly adaptable and can be customized by the research team for each project.

REDCap is intended for health-related research that requires electronic data collection.

Using REDCap's stream-lined process for rapidly developing projects, you may create and design projects using 1) the online method from your web browser using the Online Designer; and/or 2) the offline method by constructing a 'data dictionary' template file in Microsoft Excel, which can be later uploaded into REDCap. Both surveys and databases (or a mixture of the two) can be built using these methods.

REDCap allows for more granular access rights to be granted for datasets, along with comprehensive logging and audit trails. Changes to data are more easily tracked using these features. Because of these features and on-premises storage location, REDCap is more suited to use with S4 data, and is often more suitable for research projects.

REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.

NOTICE: If you are collecting data for the purposes of human subjects research, review and approval of the project is required by the UTRGV Institutional Review Board (IRB).
