A Tour of Cuzco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu and the Trail of Inca Resistance - Cusco, Peru

  • Program Description: The study abroad Peru program is a three-week immersion in Peruvian culture, history, food, and biology. The trip is a collaboration between the School of Art and Honors College. Honors College Dean Mark Andersen is a biologist, and his course will cover the flora and fauna of three distinct Peruvian ecosystems: the desert coast and ocean, the cordillera, and the high jungle. Robert Bradley is a pre-Columbian Andean art historian who has focused on Peru for more than two decades. On this trip we will visit the oldest city in the Americas, Caral, which thrived on Peru’s coast five-thousand years ago. We will also travel to the North Coast towns of Lambayeque and Trujillo, which is Peru’s most famous gastronomic center. We will then go trekking in the Andean cloud forest and visit one of the world’s largest waterfalls, Gocta. In the high jungle near Tarapoto we will study spectacular birds like Peru’s national bird the fiery orange cock-of-the-rocks. Finally, and extension journey to Machu Picchu will close out the trip.

Science and Culture in the City of London, United Kingdom

  • Program Description: Our program is 3 weeks (one of the longest programs and best value for money) in London led by Dr. Caroline Miles and Dr. Greg Gilson.  Dr. Miles is a British citizen who grew up in London and who has intricate knowledge of London and surrounding England, and Dr. Gilson has studied in England and spent many summers there. This program is a wonderful opportunity to connect studying humanities and the history of science to a global location of significance to the development of both areas of study (and with somebody from London!). This interdisciplinary course will explore the nature of literature and science as well as the relationship between London’s history, culture, class divides, immigration policies, and multiculturalism. Core, lower-division, upper-division, and graduate courses in English, Humanities, and Philosophy can be taken (INDS 2390 (core requirement), ENGL 2341 (core requirement), ENGL 6316, 4300 ENGL, PHIL 1366 (core requirement), PHIL 3317). The professors are very hands-on and will provide instruction in the mornings and then lead tours of museums, sites of interest, and trips to other significant places in England outside of London in the afternoons (and on weekends for those interested). Walk in the footsteps of famous writers and scientists including J.K. Rowling, Charles Dickens, Issac Newton and Charles Darwin, see original manuscripts in the British Museum, and of course shop at Harrods, try to make the guards laugh at Buckingham palace, and eat some of the best food in the world!!!!

Fundamental international management concepts are discussed while application of these concepts into the course project is the main objective of the course. We will discuss and compare doing business in the U.S. and South Korea.The course will include interfacing withKorean universities, companies and cultural attractions.The opportunity to study business in Koreawill help students to expand their perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of international business and economics.
