By Maria Elena Hernandez

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS - MARCH 16, 2018 – While just starting its second year, a program at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley already has helped local businesses save more than a million dollars.

The South Texas Industrial Assessment Center, housed in the UTRGV College of Engineering and Computer Science, sends undergraduate and graduate students to local manufacturers to assess operations and find ways the businesses can save energy and streamline processes.

“We try to reduce their energy consumption, their waste, in order for them to increase profits,” said Raul Barbosa, a UTRGV senior majoring in mechanical engineering and accounting.

The center is funded by a $1.25 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

By Omar Flores

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 1, 2017

The UTRGV Industrial Assessment Center, in coordination with the senior key account representatives Danny Marez and Joey Garcia, as well as the business development key account manager Eddie Campirano Jr. from the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, held an energy bills training for UTRGV graduate and undergraduate students participating in the IAC program.

This training helped faculty and students from the department of Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering as well as the department of Electrical Engineering to better understand the energy bills that manufacturers receive; this allows the IAC team to be better prepared to perform efficient assessments to companies and manufacturers.
