UTRGV ITAC and CYMANII Partner to Boost Cybersecurity and Energy Resilience in South Texas
MISSION, TEXAS - August 13, 2025 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Industrial Training and Assessment Center (ITAC) teamed up with the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CyManII) to boost cybersecurity + energy resilience across South Texas!
Together with UTRGV’s Office for Sustainability (OFS) and Regional Security Operations Center (RSOC), they are helping cities like Mission prepare for while protecting critical infrastructure like water facilities.
“This is a great opportunity to strengthen the resilience of our communities,” said Sergio Perez, UTRGV’s Director of Sustainability.

STIAC at UTRGV: Student assessments help save more than $1M for area businesses

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS - MARCH 16, 2018 – While just starting its second year, a program at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley already has helped local businesses save more than a million dollars.
The South Texas Industrial Assessment Center, housed in the UTRGV College of Engineering and Computer Science, sends undergraduate and graduate students to local manufacturers to assess operations and find ways the businesses can save energy and streamline processes.
“We try to reduce their energy consumption, their waste, in order for them to increase profits,” said Raul Barbosa, a UTRGV senior majoring in mechanical engineering and accounting.
The center is funded by a $1.25 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 1, 2017
The UTRGV Industrial Assessment Center, in coordination with the senior key account representatives Danny Marez and Joey Garcia, as well as the business development key account manager Eddie Campirano Jr. from the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, held an energy bills training for UTRGV graduate and undergraduate students participating in the IAC program.
This training helped faculty and students from the department of Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering as well as the department of Electrical Engineering to better understand the energy bills that manufacturers receive; this allows the IAC team to be better prepared to perform efficient assessments to companies and manufacturers.
