The Department of Housing and Residence Life depends on University of Texas Rio Grande Valley students to assist with many of the programs and services that we offer at the Department of Housing  Working with the department gives student workers the opportunity to meet other UTRGV students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.

Resident Assistant Applications for 2022-2023 academic year

Position Description:  The Resident Assistant (RA) is a paraprofessional (student leader) in the Department of Housing and Residence Life (HRL) with responsible for assisting in the achievement of this goal.  RAs enforce rules, respond to crises, mentor, and build community. Specific responsibilities include the implementation of programs that encourage community development and personal growth as well as the support and implementation of policies and procedures that encourage a positive academic environment.  The RA also serves as a peer counselor and resource regarding the UTRGV community.  It is expected that any person who applies for an RA position is sincerely interested in the welfare of students and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and consequently, is constructively supportive of both.

  • Work Period: Early August - End of May (10 months) with break period responsibilities.
  • Time Commitment: An RA can expect to be on duty on a regular basis, and should be accessible to students in the halls most evenings.  An RA should also expect to spend, on average, one night per week and one weekend per six weeks on duty.  This varies according to staff size in each building.  Additionally the RA is expected to build community where residents interact on a regular basis. The RA will plan programs and activities to foster their community. They will also act as a role model, peer advisor as well as a resource to help their residents navigate their University experience. Other responsibilities may be determined by the Residence Life professional staff.
  • Remuneration: 
    1. A single room* in a residence hall/apartment
    • (*When there is an excess housing demand, the Director may reserve the right to offer a shared room to accommodate capacity or other demands)
    1. A campus dining plan*
    • 10 meals per week plus $100 Dining Dollars (Edinburg, TX) 
    • $200 Dining Dollars ( Brownsville, TX)

Selection Process & Important Dates

The selection process for the RA position has three steps:

Step 1: Submit Online Application

All candidates must submit an online application.

Step 2: In Person Interview

Candidates moving on to the next stage of the process will sign up for and participate in an in-person individual interview

Candidates will receive emails to their UTRGV email throughout the process updating them on the status of their candidacy. Email is the primary method of communication during this process. Emails will come from either Jessica Vallejo (jessica.vallejo@utrgv.edu) or Ruben Santibanez (ruben.santibanez@utrgv.edu).

Candidates should not expect to receive communication regarding their application until after the application is closed.

Candidates that are hired will need to attend RA Training/ Move-in: August 1, 2022- August 30, 2022. Hired candidates should not take Summer II courses.
