Invasion of the Robots: HESTEC kicks off at Pharr Events Center

PHARR, TEXAS – OCT. 1, 2018 – More than 40 energy-filled middle and high school robotics teams from across the Rio Grande Valley competed in a quadrathon challenge at the Pharr Events Center to start off UTRGV’s annual Hispanic, Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week.

Forty-four energy-filled middle and high school robotics teams from across the Rio Grande Valley competed in a quadrathon challenge at the Pharr Events Center on Monday, to kick off UTRGV’s annual Hispanic, Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week. Students from as far as Laredo pitted their robots against competing teams. Each team was in charge of building its own robot out of Lego® parts and programming it to compete in a number of competitions, including a maze, going up and down a ramp, and a search and rescue. .

HESTEC: Fifth graders have wild time at STEM+Me Expo at UTRGV Brownsville Campus

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS - OCT. 2, 2018 - UTRGV’s Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week introduced a new interactive feature this year, called the STEM+ME Expo.
More than 300 fifth-grade students from Brownsville ISD and San Benito CISD visited UTRGV in Brownsville on Tuesday and had a chance to tour the campus, participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations, and check out some interesting exhibits focused on the “Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences” theme.

UTRGV SOM hosts Workforce Solutions Healthcare Industry Taskforce during HESTEC

EDINBURG, TEXAS - OCT. 2, 2018 - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine hosted Workforce Solutions’ Healthcare Industry Taskforce, Tuesday, Oct. 2, during the university’s annual Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) week.
Taskforce members received updates on the UTRGV College of Health Professions, School of Medicine and School of Nursing, and took a tour of the Medical Education Building on the Edinburg Campus.

STEM+ME

Elementary students from around the area came to UTRGV Brownsville for the first HESTEC STEM +ME Expo for 5th grade students.
Students participated in STEM learning activities such as meeting animals from the Gladys Porter Zoo, and animal bingo with Resaca de la Palma park.

'Go after your dream' Kate the Chemist headlines HESTEC 2018 Latina Day at UTRGV

EDINBURG, TEXAS - OCT 3, 2018 – More than 500 young women from middle schools in Brownsville, La Joya and Edinburg filled the Fieldhouse on the UTRGV Edinburg Campus for Latina Day, part of UTRGV’s 17th annual Hispanic, Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week.
They were gathered to listen to powerful, inspirational women from the Rio Grande Valley and beyond, like Dr. Kate Biberdorf, also known as Kate the Chemist.

Middle and high school students learn about health professions during HESTEC Week 2018

EDINBURG, TEXAS – OCT. 3, 2018 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine and Division of Health Affairs welcomed more than 1,000 middle and high school students during UTRGV HESTEC Week 2018.
Students visited tables staffed with faculty, students and staff, who provided information on the various health professions programs UTRGV has to offer. The students also heard from Dr. John H. Krouse, executive vice president for Health Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, and current medical students about what to expect when entering medical school and what they should do to prepare for a career in the health professions.

Dr. Kate Biberdorf, Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin, creates a large cloud by combining liquid nitrogen and boiling water during the UTRGV Hispanic Engineering, Science, and Technology (HESTEC) Latina Day on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018 at the Health & Physical Education II building in Edinburg, Texas. Female students and mothers throughout South Texas are brought together to participate in hands-on workshops and hear inspiring stories of prominent minority women from different walks of life and industries.

Motivational speaker Greenfield encourages middle school students to be positive, take charge of the future

EDINBURG, TEXAS - OCT 4, 2018 There were lots high-fives, hugs and even a few tears during Student Leadership Day, part of Hispanic Engineering, Science Technology (HESTEC) Week at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Middle school students from across the Valley convened on the Edinburg Campus to immerse themselves in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields and hear from inspiring speakers on the fourth day of the weeklong event.

SeaPerch Challenge tests the STEM minds of students through underwater robot challenge

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – More than 30 middle school and high school teams from across the Rio Grande Valley participated in the annual U.S. Navy SeaPerch Challenge, a staple of Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.



Augmented Reality Exhibit at UTRGV allows guests to walk with dinosaurs

EDINBURG, TEXAS - School children from across the Rio Grande Valley got to walk with dinosaurs, swim with dolphins and take a walk on the moon, courtesy of the Augmented Reality Exhibit at the Fieldhouse on the UTRGV Edinburg Campus.

The exhibit – hosted by the UTRGV Office of Public Art in conjunction with this year's Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week STEM+ME Expo – uses unique 3D visuals and photorealistic characters to immerse students in a world of virtual reality and allowing them to touch the untouchable.

The UTRGV HESTEC events continued with the SeaPerch competition held this year in Brownsville at the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center.
Schools from all over the Valley came to Brownsville to compete in this Navy-sponsored program, with the winner moving on to a national competition.
SeaPerch is an underwater robotics competition where school teams build a ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) that needs to navigate a complicated obstacle course, and manipulate objects, all underwater.
During the competition, 2 team members control the ROV, one steering, and one manipulating the connected wire.

HESTEC Week Closes with Community Day

The entire Rio Grande Valley is invited to Community Day at the UTRGV Edinburg campus. This free event will feature family-friendly activities and food vendors. Entertainment includes a production of Peter & The Wolf, featuring music by UTRGV faculty. The fairytale comes to life on stage at 4 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex (PAC).

  • In the PAC lobby, there will be a musical petting zoo with instruments.
  • UTRGV colleges and departments will also open their doors to showcase what they have to offer prospective students.
  • The "Augmented Reality Experience" exhibit inside the Visitors Center will be open to the public and visitors will explore augmented reality while immersed in cinema-quality 3D environments and interact with photo-realistic characters in real time, from dinosaurs to killer whales. Admission is free.
  • Entertainment closes with Grammy Award-winning Norteño/Tejano music by Grupo Solido.
