Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree prepares students to be eligible for work in leadership and administration or as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). The DNP is a practice-based doctorate and is one of two terminal degrees in the nursing field (the other being a Ph.D.). UTRGV’s DNP program is based on the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Practice developed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) required competencies with a special emphasis on interprofessional team building. The DNP is a fully online program through the School of Nursing, within the Division of Health Affairs.
The DNP consists of a 45-hour post-master’s curriculum. The curriculum includes courses in Role Transition, Biostatistics, Informatics, Epidemiology, Clinical Scholarship, Health Care Financing, and Policy Development, Leadership and Management, Outcomes Management, and Population Focused Collaborative Initiative as core content. Students also take Values and Ethics in Interprofessional Practice, Roles & Responsibilities for Collaborative Practice and Interprofessional Teamwork, and Teamwork Based Care as supporting courses. The coursework combination meets the competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice as defined by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (2017).
