The Graduate Certificate in Court Interpreting seeks to appeal both to practicing professionals and candidates who aim to obtain high-end interpreting abilities in the court and judiciary areas (translation of legal documents, simultaneous and consecutive interpreting). This program is offered fully online using video streaming technology. Students take 15 credits (5 courses) of graduate classes.

Admission Requirements

Step #1: Submit a UTRGV Graduate Application at www.utrgv.edu/gradapply. There is no application fee.

*Please Note: If you are a graduate of UTPA, UTB/TSC, or UTRGV you do not need to request an official transcript to be sent to the Graduate College.

Review and submit all Program Requirements:

  • Bachelor's  degree  from  a  regionally  accredited  institution  in  the United States or a recognized international equivalent in a similar or related field.
  • Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Official transcripts from each institution attended (must be submitted directly to UTRGV).
  • Personal interview (Online or in person).
  • Letter of recommendation. 
  • Submission of a short essay in Spanish.
  • Satisfactory performance essay on the translation of a document from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English.
    • A translation test waiver may be granted to applicants who hold a state or federal court or medical interpreting license.

Students whose native  language is not English  or  who studied at a University outside the U.S.:

  • TOEFL or IELTS Language Proficiency Test with minimum scores: 550 on paper-based, 213 on computer based, or 79 on Internet-based for the TOEFL; 6.5 for the IELTS. TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for 2 years. For additional information, visit the English Proficiency Exam section of our website.
  • Certified English translation of educational records.
Students in fully online programs are not eligible for I-20 or student visas.

Applications will be accepted year round and prospective students are encouraged to apply at least 2 months before classes start to ensure a timely application review.  Applying early will also give prospective students the best opportunity to be considered for scholarships and other possible funding opportunities.

*Note:

  • This program only admits applicants during Fall, Spring, Summer I and Summer II semesters.
  • Students admitted only to a Certificate Program are not eligible to obtain a Student Visa from UTRGV.

Course Descriptions

SPAN 6342: Translation Workshop: Spanish‐English               [3‐0]

Intensive review of translation techniques and intensive practice of translation from Spanish into English covering a variety of text typologies, including but not limited to general informative texts, literary texts, and technical texts. Taught in Spanish and English.

Prerequisite: TRSP/SPAN 3342 or TRSP/SPAN 3343 or instructor’s approval.

SPAN 6343: Translation Workshop: English‐Spanish              [3‐0]

Intensive review of translation techniques and practice of translation from English into Spanish covering a variety of text typologies, including but not limited to general informative texts, literary texts, and technical texts. Taught in Spanish. All papers, and examinations in Spanish.

Prerequisites: TRSP/SPAN 3342 or TRSP/SPAN 3343 or instructor’s approval.

SPAN 6344: Translation of Legal Texts              [3‐0]

Intensive practice of translation with texts of legal and judiciary nature, from English into Spanish and vice‐versa, with close attention to national and international legal systems.

Prerequisites: TRSP/SPAN 3342 or TRSP/SPAN 3343 or TRSP/SPAN 6342 or TRSP/SPAN 6343.

Intensive practice in simultaneous interpreting with close reference to actual usages among professional interpreters in the United States.

INTG 6378: Court Interpreting              [3‐0]

Intensive study and practice of sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting with reference to judiciary application.
