Summer Mentoring

The purpose of the Summer Research, Scholarship, and Creative Works Mentoring Program (RSCMP) is to provide one-to-one mentoring opportunities for 10 faculty across UTRGV who aim to submit an external research grant proposal or to develop scholarly projects and/or creative work intended for publication, presentation, or performance during the 2023-2024 academic year.

     APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 22, 2023

     MENTORING START DATE: June 5, 2023

Mentees will be selected to participate on a first-come-first-serve basis with 5 slots reserved for associate professors. The application may close sooner than the deadline if capacity is reached.

Faculty Mentee Eligibility and Commitment

  • Full-time, permanent faculty at UTRGV who has scholarship expectations and is evaluated on scholarly output
  • Faculty should have a draft of the idea/grant/paper/scholarly/creative work that they will be using during this program
  • Commitment to meet at least once a week (in person or virtually) with the Faculty Mentor during the 8 weeks of this program (June 5 - August 1).
  • Commitment to submission of a grant/paper/scholarly/creative work during summer 2023 or during the Academic Year 2023-2024.
  • 5 slots will be reserved for associate professors

Mentee Application Timeline and Requirements

Program Timeline

  • June 5 to August 1 (8 weeks during the summer)

Application Deadline: May 22, 2023 (Participation will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. The application may close sooner if capacity is reached.) 

Application Requirements:

  • Abbreviated CV (3 pages max)
  • A brief statement of interest (1 page) sharing a description of your project and related submission goals along with why you believe this program would benefit you.
  • Name of proposed faculty mentor (if applicable)

Faculty Mentor Selection

Mentors will be individually sought out by the Office of Faculty Success & Diversity based on the priorities they put forward in their application. 

All mentors selected will have the following: 

  • Have produced recent and current scholarship or creative works or have obtained external grants.
  • Have an experienced approach to respectfully mentoring other faculty 
  • Faculty mentors will be assigned according to the faculty mentee priorities and field of expertise (e.g., fine arts, grant proposal, etc.).
    • Faculty mentees may also write in their preferred mentor.

SRSCMP is an intensive 8-week summer program with a primary goal of assisting faculty who are seeking to work on their research, scholarship, or creative works and would benefit from one-to-one feedback from a peer.

Faculty participants will receive a certificate of participate upon completion of the program. 

Complete Program

To satisfactorily complete this program:

  • Faculty Mentors and mentees will first attend a general introductory meeting that will provide a baseline for expectations and best practices.
  • The faculty mentee will submit 4 bi-weekly progress reports (1 page or less) to the Office of Faculty Success & Diversity.
  • The faculty mentee will send proof of the submitted grant/paper/scholarly/creative work to the Office of Faculty Success & Diversity at facultysuccess@utrgv.edu.
