Art Gallery Example: Macuiltianguis Zapotec Toys: An Effort in Popularizing and Revitalizing an Endangered Language

Pechis M. Martinez, Javier Pina, Cristina Mendez, Paula Foreman, Kiara Wing

Macuiltianguis Zapotec (MacZ) is an endangered language from San Pablo Macuiltianguis, Oaxaca. We are a part of an evolving group of undergraduate students who have been working with Dr. John Foreman on his research to document the indigenous language of MacZ.

After the completion of a trilingual children’s storybook written in Zapotec, Spanish, and English, we handcrafted the main characters into plush interactive toys. The main characters are hand stitched plush toys with voice cards that recite lines from the story in Zapotec. The production of these toys is a part of our continuous efforts for the popularization and revitalization of MacZ.
