Engaged Scholar Symposium

Description: The Engaged Scholar Symposium (ES2) is the largest multidisciplinary gathering of undergraduate scholars in South Texas and was conceived to share and celebrate multidisciplinary undergraduate research, service learning projects, and creative works. Students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to participate in the symposium, hosted at both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses on consecutive days. Keynote speakers are featured, and community partners will share opportunities to participate in experiential learning within the Rio Grande Valley community.

Festival of International Books and Arts (FESTIBA)

Description: The Festival of International Books and Arts (FESTIBA) was established in 2006 to promote the importance of literacy, culture and the arts to students, parents, educators and community members throughout the Rio Grande Valley. With the theme The Healing Arts: Arte y Salud – Una Buena Alianza!, FESTIBA 2017 will take place February 27 through March 5. Healing is more than the prevention and curing of disease — it is also about the fulfillment and expression of the full potential of the heart, the mind and the spirit! Traditional healing arts include music, art, dance, creative writing, and drama. The healing arts have been described as creative activities and practices of artistic expression that promote wellness and healthy living. Join us for FESTIBA 2017, as we explore the positive impact of the healing arts on good health!

Pulse Magazine

Description: Pulse Magazine produces an annual magazine for the UTRGV campus and community at large that: provides a creative venue for student writing, photography and graphic design, gives a snapshot in time within a cultural context, connects academic experience with practical applications, and gives students valuable experience that can make them competitive in the professional environment. Student submissions are welcome on any topic from any field, especially non-fiction works. Submit to pulse.magazine@utrgv.edu for consideration.

International Conference on Border Studies

International Conference on Border Studies

Description: The Second International Conference of Border Studies is hosted by The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas. Professors, researchers, students and the general public are invited to participate and collaborate in a unique geographic region on the important and timely issues related to borders, and to work together to find solutions to some of the most important economic, social, and ecological problems we face today. Our goal is to generate a space for exchange of research and communication among those interested in issues related to the border including, but not limited to: Health, Economics, Politics, Migration, Socio/Cultural Processes, HR Management, and Global Borders. Papers will focus on the US-Mexico border as well as the ideology of borders more generally and how borders help us understand broader global issues. October 25th, 2017 will take place at Auditorium of the Multidisciplinary Academic Unit of UAT Matamoros and the Auditorium of the Research College of the Northern Border. October 26th and 27th, 2017 will take place at UTRGV Brownsville Campus.

Southwest Texas Asian Symposium

Southwest Texas Asian Symposium

Description: The 2017 Southwestern Texas Asian Symposium is to bring scholars, researchers, practitioners, and students together to discuss issues related to teaching and researching in the Asian contexts. Specifically, it aims to provide a forum that allows participants across disciplines to explore critical issues about Asia and fosters a community of professionals specialized in Asia-related research and Asian scholars. Promoting and serving for diversity and globalization in higher education, the Southwestern Texas Asian Symposium will be an avenue for academic and professional discourse amongst faculty, students, and practitioners in various fields and specialties. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to submit proposals to present their work pertinent to Asia. The SWTAS Student Poster Session welcomes the work in the following nature across disciplines. To submit a student poster proposal, please complete SWTAS Student Poster Proposal Form by Monday, October 23, 2017.

NAAAS International Research Forum

NAAAS International Research Forum

Description: The International Research Form is co-hosted by The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the National Association of Hispanic and Latino Studies. Persons interested in presenting a paper, roundtable presentation, etc. should submit an abstract, not to exceed two pages, that is related to experiences of Hispanics, Latinos, Chicanos, and/or Mexicans. Subjects may include, but are not limited to: literature, demographics, history, politics, economics, education, health care, fine arts, religion, social sciences, business and many other subjects. Interested scholars should submit his/her abstract with presenter’s name, institution/organization, address, phone and email no later than October 6, 2017. Please forward abstracts to: Lemuel Berry, Jr., Ph.D., Executive Director, NAAAS & Affiliates, PO Box 6670, Scarborough, ME 04070-6670, or by fax to 207/856-2800, or via email at naaasconference@naaas.org. Conference registration fees: $200.00 for Faculty/Professionals; $125.00 for Full-time Student.
