Thursday, March 14, 2024 | RESOLVED: Altercation involving Firearm in Harlingen
Dear UTRGV Community,
Earlier today, UTRGV Police responded to an altercation involving a firearm in the parking lot of the Harlingen VA Outpatient Clinic, which is next to the UTRGV Clinical Education Building. Out of an abundance of caution, UTRGV Police ordered all persons in the area to shelter in place during the search for the suspect.
Since then, UTRGV Police have confirmed that the firearm was not discharged and that the suspect was apprehended near McAllen. Police also confirmed that neither the suspect nor the victims were affiliated with UTRGV. Normal activities resumed at the UTRGV Clinical Building in Harlingen around 10:20 AM.
Your safety and well-being remain our top priority. UTRGV’s Office of Emergency Management website contains detailed procedures on what to do during many scenarios, including active shooter situations. All students, faculty, and staff should be familiar with these procedures and utilize them when facing these threats.
As a reminder, the UTRGV Alert page is an accessory to the Emergency Alert Notification and official UTRGV email communications. That page may contain supplemental information during a disaster, crisis, or threat affecting our campus community.

UTRGV Police have been responding to an altercation involving a gun that took place in the parking lot of the Harlingen VA Outpatient Clinic adjacent to the UTRGV Regional Academic Health Center.
Law enforcement agencies could not locate the suspect upon arrival to the scene. However, out of abundance of caution, UTRGV Police have ordered all UTRGV students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the area to continue sheltering in place as the search continues.

Dear Campus Community:
UTRGV officials are continuously monitoring a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico with an 80% chance of forming into either a tropical depression or tropical storm later today (Monday, August 21), according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters are predicting 1-3 inches of rainfall across the region through Wednesday, August 23, and wind gusts of 25-45 mph for Harlingen, Brownsville, and South Padre Island, which are expected to clear up by early afternoon on Tuesday, August 22. However, all UTRGV community members, including those in Laredo, are advised to take precautions as the system moves inland.

All UTRGV campuses will have a delayed opening of 10 a.m. Tuesday because of inclement weather and because many buildings on the Edinburg campus are currently without power.
For Students
All classes scheduled before 10 a.m. Tuesday (including those conducted online) are canceled for all UTRGV campuses. All classes scheduled for 10 a.m. and later Tuesday will continue as normal for all UTRGV campuses.
Transportation services from all campuses will not be available for students until 9 a.m.
For Employees
On-campus operations will begin at 10 a.m. for all campuses.
Please avoid accessing all Edinburg campus facilities until 10 a.m. Brownsville campus buildings are currently accessible but classes and campus operations will not begin until 10 a.m.
Employees who can work remotely should do so during regular business hours.
Employees who cannot work remotely and must be on campus to perform their job duties should report to work at 10 a.m. These employees should enter two hours of emergency leave on their timesheet for April 26, 2022.

UT Health RGV
Student and Employee Health Clinics located on our campuses will not open until 10 a.m.
All other UT Health RGV clinics throughout the Rio Grande Valley will operate under normal business hours.

UTRGV Police Statement for Tuesday, March 8th

The UTRGV Police Department (UTRGV PD) was notified by the Hidalgo County Sherriff’s Office on February 21, 2022, that a university employee allegedly had made threats involving our campus community.
UTRGV PD has been investigating this matter, and arrested the individual Friday (March 4) on charges of terroristic threat. The individual was released on bond Saturday (March 5). The individual is currently on investigative leave as the university conducts an administrative review of the incident. During this time, the individual is not authorized to be on UTRGV campuses or locations.
The threat was addressed when it first arose. Based on information gathered by UTRGV PD there is no immediate threat to the campus community at this time. UTRGV PD's investigation of this matter continues.

Dear UTRGV Community,
Due to inclement winter weather forecasted by the National Weather Service (NWS), all UTRGV campus and off-campus facilities will delay opening until 10 AM tomorrow (Friday, January 21).
Despite this delay, all classes currently being conducted remotely will take place at their previously scheduled time. However, all classes currently meeting in-person and scheduled before 10 AM will be canceled.
All students and employees should exercise caution when traveling on icy or slick roads. If you have issues accessing campus for work or academic responsibilities, please communicate with your professor and/or supervisor.

UTRGV officials are continuously monitoring tropical storm Nicholas currently in the Bay of Campeche.
The current forecast track has tropical storm Nicholas passing east of South Padre Island as it moves North-Northwest at 13 mph along the Texas coast. Regardless, tropical storm force winds (39 mph or greater) and heavy rains (4“to 6”) are likely along our coastal counties, including Cameron and Willacy as early as Monday morning.
While all UTRGV and UT Health RGV operations are currently expected to continue as scheduled, University officials are monitoring weather conditions and will share any updates to campus impacts, including potential campus closures, through UTRGV’s:

Thank you for your patience and cooperation the past few days as the university responded to the impact Hurricane Hanna had on our campus/off-campus facilities.
While UTRGV continues to assess facilities, a majority of our campus/off-campus facilities have been cleared to be accessed by students, faculty, staff and visitors beginning Wednesday, July 29.

Employees who were working on campus before Hurricane Hanna may return to on-campus operations. Employees who have been working remotely may continue remote operations.

Supervisors are reminded that they must provide a list of their employees who actually worked on Monday, July 27, instead of receiving Emergency Leave.
Also, any requests for additional Emergency Leave should come from the supervisor and be in writing to Leave@utrgv.edu and should include employee name, ID #, supervisor name, department and reason for extended emergency leave.

Dear UTRGV community,
UTRGV will reopen Tuesday, July 28, but campus/off-campus facilities will remain inaccessible to the university community and visitors due to the impact of Hurricane Hanna.
Only employees designated as essential by their supervisors to assist the university in responding to Hurricane Hanna’s impact are allowed to access campus/off-campus facilities on Tuesday.
Please note the university will continue to operate and provide services remotely, including the delivery of classes for Summer Session II. All students and employees should return to normal remote operations Tuesday.
In addition, UT Health RGV clinical operations and testing sites will return to normal operations Tuesday, and UT Health RGV employees should report to work as usual.

Dear UTRGV Employees,
Earlier, a notice was issued that UTRGV campuses and UT Health RGV clinical locations will be closed on Monday, July 27, due to Hurricane Hanna.
Employees designated as essential by their supervisors to assist the university respond to the impact associated with Hurricane Hanna are expected to work Monday, July 27.
Employees who are working remotely should not plan to work on Monday, July 27. Working remotely requires technical connectivity. Due to the storm, many internet providers are experiencing service disruption.
Employees should plan for a return to normal Campus/Remote operations Tuesday, July 28 unless otherwise notified.
