About

Welcome to the Department of Marketing! Our department is dedicated to providing marketing education that prepares students to become leaders for Texas and the world. We provide high-quality educational opportunities in our academic programs including our undergraduate degree in Marketing with specialized certificates in Entertainment, Branding and Communication, Multicultural and Global Business, and Design and New Product Commercialization. Our American Marketing Association student chapter is very active and organizes an annual Marketing Week, a Fashion Show and the Helix Music Fest. Our Ph.D. program in Marketing has trained scholars who are now on the faculty of Florida State University, the University of Maine, Ohio University, St. Bonaventure, and other fine institutions.

Our faculty members are knowledge creators and active researchers who have published in top marketing journals including the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Retailing, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Advertising, Journal of International Business Studies, and elsewhere.

Vision and Mission

We intend for our students to envision our department as composed of vibrant and creative faculty who are dedicated to the success of our students, and a mission to contribute to the body of knowledge.

Marketing focuses on activities outside the business firm, especially with customers and potential customers.  We try to answer a variety of questions.  Some of them include:

  •     How do we gain insight into new products that customers will want?
  •     What is the interplay between emotion and rational decision-making about product costs?
  •     Can we understand consumer wants better if we study the brain or our genes?
  •     How do we best communicate our product offerings?
  •     What are the ethical issues of marketing potentially unhealthy products, or advertising to children, subliminal messages, or compulsive shopping?
  •     What tools are available to aid us in researching customer needs and wants?
