The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Center for Vector-Borne Disease was established 2017 to help promote research, education, and community engagement in vector-borne diseases. The Rio Grande Valley region of South Texas is a prime location for multiple vector-borne diseases, including but not limited to Chagas disease, dengue virus, Zika virus, and Flea-borne typhus. Understanding the vectors and the pathogens will enable increased understanding of disease transmission, risks, and potential for prevention. With multiple dedicated UTRGV faculty from Math, Biology, Chemistry, and the School of Medicine, the Center aims to help enhance research efforts through increased collaboration and grantsmanship. In addition, the Center provides education opportunities to students in the form of certificate programs and internship opportunities. Lastly, engaging with the public helps increase community knowledge and prevention of vector-borne diseases.
