Connecting Theory to Practice in Science and STEM Education Research

In 1994, I began teaching undergraduate biology in Michigan after completing my MS in Biology at the University of Kentucky. In 2004, I began teaching middle school and then high school science in central Florida while also teaching undergraduate anatomy and physiology courses. In 2013, I earned my PhD in Teaching and Learning in Science from the University of South Florida. Since 2013, I have been a faculty member in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education and P-16 Integration. In intentionally connect my teaching, research, and service so that each inform the other. I have taught undergraduate courses for elementary and secondary preservice teachers as well as graduate courses. A present line of scholarship is on linguistic capital for bilingual students who are native Spanish speaking or Spanish is a 2nd language. This research takes place in high school and undergraduate classrooms with undergraduate and graduate students. A second line of scholarship is exploring the social, cultural, historical, and economic circumstances that influence P-12 students learning and engagement in STEM.

Engaging Students in Interdisciplinary Research: Perspectives from the Field of Art History

I am a historian of medieval art, architecture, and visual culture, specializing in the artistic production of Western Europe from 800 to 1300, with a primary interest in early medieval manuscripts and museum studies. I received my M.A. (2005) in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Art from the Catholic University in Milan, Italy, and my Ph.D. (2012) in Medieval Art from Johns Hopkins University. Before joining the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley, I served as the Zanvyl Krieger Curatorial Fellow in the Department of Manuscript and Rare Books at the Walters Art Museum from 2009 to 2012, where I collaborated on the digital catalog of the manuscript collections. From 2013 to 2015, I taught as Visiting Assistant Professor of Medieval Art at the University of Minnesota, Morris. In the spring of 2022, I was Visiting Faculty Fellow in the Department of Art & Archeology at Princeton University. My research emphasizes the study of medieval image theory, artifacts material, and the relationship between art, theology, philosophy, and aesthetics. I have published in journals, including Gesta and ABside, and am currently working on a book project that studies the relationship between art and philosophy at the Carolingian court. At UTRGV, I teach courses in medieval art of Europe, Renaissance Art, museum studies, and illuminated manuscripts.

Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE): A Model for Community-Engaged Scholarship at the Intersection of Teaching, Research, and Service

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), where I teach in the Accelerated Online Master of Science in Health Sciences program. I hold degrees from the American University of Beirut (BBA, MBA) and The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) (PhD). Previous appointments include Director of the South Texas Border Health Disparities Center at UTPA, Research Associate at the Center for Border Economic Studies at UTPA, and faculty appointments at the University of Texas-Brownsville, the University of Texas-Pan American and the American University of Beirut. I have extensive experience in health disparities research and in accelerated online and hybrid teaching modalities. My research interests focus on health literacy, health care coverage, and health education among underserved communities along the Texas-Mexico border. My current research centers around the integration of the social determinants of health in health professions education and the preparation of a diverse, culturally-competent health workforce to promote population health equity.

Motivating and Preparing Students for Manuscript Presentations in Biomedical Research

I finished my surgical residency in Cleveland, OH, and earned a Master of Science degree in clinical investigation at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio following my residency.
Prior to UTRGV, I was a professor of surgery at Texas A&M University, College of Medicine, served as Chief of Podiatry Section under Surgical Services at Central Texas VA Health Care System, where I also served as a member of Podiatric Surgical Advisory Board (SAB) for the National Surgery Office (NPO), National Podiatry Field Advisory Committee for the Office of Patient Care Services under Veterans Health Administration, Chief Podiatry Consultant (VCPC) for VISN 17, and VA Site Director for the Baylor Scott and White Podiatric Surgery and Medicine Residency Program.
My passion for education led me to serve as a Director of the Continue Medical Education Committee for the Texas Podiatric Medical Association (TPMA) and Chair of the Annual Scientific Conference Committee for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) after leading their manuscript and abstract competitions for over 4 years.
My research interest includes foot and ankle reconstruction and diabetic amputation/healing. I specialize in health services research, epidemiology, and large data analysis.

Infusing Sustainability into the Classroom across Disciplines: A Humane-Inclusive-Sustainable Education Model (HIS-E) Approach

I am a visionary entrepreneur, educator, and advocate of Humane-Innovation-Sustainable-based Entrepreneurship and Community Engagement across disciplines. I empower my students through my Quintuple Helix Model Adopt a Startup Program. In 2007, I launched the 1st. Business and Intellectual Property Center at IBERO Torreon. I also designed and implemented a Triple Helix Model called Adopta Una Empresa, linking Mexican Universities, Startups, and the Government assisting more than 80 startups in developing their international business plans, registering more than 47 trademarks, 4 patents, 3 utility models, etc. In 2015, I joined UTRGV, and with the students' intervention, I supported more than 70 startups in building their sustainable business plans. I advocate for innovation, community-engaged scholarship, and entrepreneurship as I continue impacting the RGV community through mentoring and volunteering in different entrepreneurial programs. I have been promoting Education for Sustainable Development, infusing sustainability and Community Engagement not just in my courses but also by embedding sustainability in several collaborative programs across disciplines like the Business & Engineering Collaboration Model with the College of Engineering and Computer Science and presenting about Sustainability in Business & Entrepreneurship Education in forums like ICSB World Congress, Open VentureWell, UT System Academy of Distinguished Teachers Conference, SIPCE Conference, SBAA Conference, TRACS Summit, ICSAC Conference, among others. I have been honored with various awards, such as the 2022 UTRGV Faculty Excellence Award in Sustainability Education, 2022 RCVCOBE Faculty Excellence Award for Service, 2022 UTRGV UT System ROTA Nominee, 2021 UTRGV Faculty Advisor, 2021 Affordability Advocate, 2020 UTRGV Outstanding International Female Faculty, SBA 2020 Women-Owned Small Business Advocate & SBA 2018 Women Business Champion of the Year.
