Description: Created using Adobe Animate and After Effects, this 2D motion graphic illustrates the connection between the twenty-four solar terms and tea through a traditional Chinese painting style.
Institution: Central Academy of Fine Arts - China (CAFA)
Description: The twenty-four solar terms reflect the ancient Chinese tradition of the harmonious relationship between heaven and humanity and the rhythm of life. The annual cycle embodies the philosophical principles of yin and yang and the ebb and flow of prosperity, further demonstrating the interconnectedness of heaven and humanity: that is, to follow the timing of nature, to follow the natural order. The creator attempts to embody these conclusions related to the solar terms through a combination of illustration and animation, using concrete and metaphorical techniques to depict the scenes of each year’s natural progression andhuman life in harmony with nature.

Instructor: Wàn Xiao-ou Li Mèng-Jin
Institution: Central Academy of Fine Arts - China (CAFA)
Description: The New Year painting is a visual representation from ancient China, symbolizing auspiciousness and joy. People express their hopes for a better life by displaying these paintings. Evolving from ancient customs surrounding the New Year, it has become a unique symbolic art form in Chinese folk culture. Inspired by this folk art, I merge ancient New Year paintingswith modern life to imbue them with new meaning. While traditional New Year paintings depict scenes and lifestyles of ancient times, in our modern renditions, you'll find those figures from the past seamlessly integrated into contemporary settings. They're seen using smartphones, eating ice cream, pushing shopping carts, shedding tears while doing homework... This transformation suggests that New Year paintings shouldn't be confined to depicting ancient contentalone. As a significant representative form of Chinese folk art, they should also radiate newvitality in the modern era.

Description: The concept of the "circle" embodies both familiarity and mystery, echoing deeply within the domain of space. In the era of the metaverse, digital realms transform spatial experiences into conceptual landscapes, giving rise to "visual space." Through simple constructs of points, lines, and surfaces corresponding to 1, 2, 3, and even 4 dimensions, space's intricate essence is encapsulated. Endlessly explorative, space intertwines with artworks seamlessly merging digital and physical realms. These creations act as portals, guiding individuals into virtual dimensions, challenging traditional spatial perceptions. The convergence of space and circle theory sparks new paradigms like "entity theory," "attribute theory," and "relationship theory," reshaping our understanding of spatial dynamics.

Description: All things are born from being, and there are born from nothing." These philosophical concepts, introduced by Lao Tzu, reflect the essence of Taoism. "Being" embodies interdependence, interaction, and transformation. From "nothing" emerges "being," perpetuating a cycle of birth and evolution. This process reshapes existence, generating diverse entities and ultimately returning to nothingness. Analogous to cellular evolution, this abstract journey is redefined in personal perception. "Reshaping the Gene" embodies this philosophical insight, offering a new interpretation of Taoist concepts through artistic expression, reflecting a transformative acceptance in a novel form.

Description: Traditional cliff carvings in China served as conduits for ancient spiritual communication, but are now fading as the digital age progresses. The design's primary objective is to deepen users' understanding of traditional cliff carvings' cultural and artistic significance while fostering new connections with traditional art. Through virtual simulation, we digitally recreate these carvings, considering their imagery, symbolism, and materials, mirroring traditional Chinese artworks. Within the virtual space, we construct a narrative focused on restoring Bodhisattva carvings and understanding their traditional artistic meanings, analyzing corresponding scriptures and designing informational interfaces. With three scene levels and integrated gamified interactions, users are immersed in the virtual story, providing a rich cultural journey and a deeper appreciation of traditional Chinese aesthetics and culture in the digital realm.

Entrant: Rèn Hóngwei, Tang Zhen (Professional)
Institution: SiChuan Fine Arts Institute, China (SCFAI)
Description: This artwork reimagines the 257th cave's "Legend of the Deer King" mural from the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang through virtual simulation, balancing both the roaming experience of VR space and the stylistic essence of Dunhuang murals. It blends forms of shadow play and paper cutting, deconstructing the mural's elements to create separate models, with some essential components represented in three-dimensional models, establishing a virtual simulation space primarily composed of 2D models supplemented by 3D ones. By exploring the connections between virtual reality interactive mechanisms and Dunhuang narrative paintings, it designs interactive mechanisms for the Nine-Colored Deer VR experience to guide interactive exhibitions within virtual reality spaces. It analyzes the symbolic language and compositional structure of the narrative and designs narrative concepts within VR space accordingly, focusing on how visual language conveys information and guides communication. The project explores the relationship between narrative logic, interactive mechanisms, and virtual reality technology, providing insights into the design of interactive mechanisms in similar contexts. Additionally, it offers a new digital recording format for the conservation of Dunhuang narrative paintings, presenting a fresh direction and approach to digitalizing research on these paintings.
