Dr. Nirakar Sahoo is an Assistant Professor in the School of Integrative Biological and Chemical Sciences at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. With a Ph.D. from Friedrich Schiller University in Germany and postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan, Dr. Sahoo's research specializes in organelle ion channels in cellular physiology. Since joining UTRGV in 2018, his lab has received substantial grants from NIH, NSF, and CPRIT, totaling over $7.2 million. He has published 32 peer-reviewed articles and has enhanced UTRGV’s research infrastructure with a recent $439,413 NSF grant for a new Transmission Electron Microscope. Dr. Sahoo is also a committed mentor, guiding numerous students and fostering future researchers. His dedication to academia and research is recognized by several awards, including the UT Rising Star Award (2018), UTRGV Faculty Excellence Award for Emerging Scholar (2024) and the COS Faculty Excellence Award for Research (2024).
