Photograph Information

Photographs were taken by Lifetouch Special Events and are not provided to graduates by UTRGV electronically or by hard copy. Graduates receive proofs of their Commencement photographs via their UTRGV email addresses, which graduating students still have access to. Inquiries should be directed to Lifetouch directly and orders must be placed through them.

Diploma Information

Diplomas will be issued by mail approximately four to six weeks after commencement and by mid-to-late September for summer graduates. Update your phone number and “DIPLOMA” mailing address in Assist: https://my.utrgv.edu/.  Please note:  A request for a duplicate diploma is submitted with the understanding that the original diploma has been damaged, printed with a former name no longer desired on the original diploma, or lost.  In the case of requests stemming from damaged diplomas or needs for an updated name, the original diploma must be returned to UTRGV at this address:

UTRGV Registrar
1201 W. University Dr.
Edinburg, TX 78539

All diploma re-prints will carry a stamp on the front of the diploma at the bottom right-hand corner that reads “Duplicate Copy” in blue ink.  The stamp is positioned such that framing could cover the stamp. Only one reprint will be issued in a 24 month period. No exceptions will be made to this procedure.

Application for Degree

All students who intend to receive a degree from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley must complete a graduation application.  Undergraduate students may apply online on ASSIST through myUTRGV by the published deadline. Application deadlines are set approximately nine months prior to the intended date of graduation.

Graduate students can apply using the UTRGV Graduation Application. Please refer to the instructions found on the UTRGV Graduate College website

Applications received after the deadline will be processed for the next available graduation date. Adherence to deadlines is imperative in order for prospective graduates to be notified of any deficiencies in time to register for the appropriate coursework.

Graduation Fee

A nonrefundable graduation fee of $32 is charged for undergraduate and graduate degrees. The fee is payable online on ASSIST or at the Bursar’s office inside U Central. The fee is used to cover processes including review of applications for graduation, diploma printing, postage, and other expenses associated with graduation and Commencement including music, graduation speakers, and other logistics associated with the commencement ceremony.

Transfer of Graduation Date

Prospective graduates who have submitted an Application for graduation and do not meet graduation requirements for that graduation date must "transfer" their application to a later graduation date. Students may complete the Request for Change of Graduation Date Form, and submit to U Central or return via email to graduation@utrgv.edu.

Commencement Exercises

Students must be enrolled in or have all coursework/degree requirements completed to participate in commencement. Students should plan to participate in the ceremony that coincides with the completion of all degree requirements, in the fall or spring. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley confers degrees at the close of each semester/term. Summer degree completion candidates within 6 hours of completing degree requirements and enrolled for the summer will be allowed to participate in the May commencement ceremonies. All others may attend the December ceremonies.

Regalia (Cap and Gown)

All students participating in the commencement ceremony are required to purchase the proper graduation regalia from the University Bookstore.  No student will be permitted to participate in the commencement ceremony without proper regalia.  Academic regalia may be adorned with stoles, ribbons, and other decoration associated with the student’s experience at UTRGV.  Adornment must be tasteful, inappropriate embellishments must be removed at the request of university officials leading commencement.
