Hostile Terrain, Rusteberg Gallery, Brownsville
This exhibition was designed by the Undocumented Migration Project (UMP), a non-profit research-art-education-media collective, and directed by anthropologist Jason De León. The installation is composed of over 3,500 handwritten toe tags that represent migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2019. These tags are geolocated on a wall map of the desert showing the exact locations where remains were found. This installation is taking place simultaneously at many national and international venues, including UTRGV. It will be on view at UTRGV starting September 15th in Edinburg and October 4th in Brownsville. We at the CLAA are excited to collaborate with Dr. Rowe and colleagues on this important exhibition!
