System of Competition:
5 rounds, Swiss System, 30 minutes per game per player with 5 seconds of delay (G/30; d5)
Latest version of Swiss Sys will be used. Pairings created by this program are considered legal and will stand even if a pairing is not ideal, especially if pairings have been already posted. Current version is 11.13
When individual scores are equal, the following order of tie-break systems will be used to designate individual awards:
1) Modified Median
2) Median
3) Solkoff
4) Sonneborn-Berger
5) Cumulative
When team scores are equal, the following order of tie-break systems will be used to designate team awards:
1) Total Individual Median
2) Total Solkoff
3) Total Sonneborn-Berger
4)Total Cumulative
Championship Format
5 sections:
• K-1
• Primary (K-3)
• Elementary (K-5)
• Middle School
• High School
Entry Fee
• $30 by September 19
• $40 by September 23
• $50 on September 24
Entries on September 24 will be permitted up to 30 minutes before the first round. Players that are not registered by the cutoff time shall be paired from Round 2 only (unless the Chief Tournament Director decides otherwise).
Awards
• $3000 UTRGV scholarship will be awarded to the winner of the High School section. If at least 2 students tie for first place, a playoff match will be played between two (2) players with the highest tie-break scores. A playoff match will consist of two (2) blitz games (5 minutes per game per player with 3 seconds of delay). In case of another tie, the tournament Final Standings (in order of tiebreaks) will decide the winner.
• Books promoting women at chess, with signatures of the UTRGV Women’s Chess Team, will be awarded to the top 3 finishers of each section.
• The top 3 finishers of each section will be invited for an online training session with the UTRGV Women’s Chess Team.
• Trophies will be awarded to the top ten individual finishers, medals from 11th to 20th, in each section.
• Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams in each section. A team shall consist of any four players from the same school, and may be designated at the conclusion of the tournament to include the top scorers from that school.
Side Event
After the conclusion of the main event, players are welcome to stay for a free simul with the UTRGV Women’s Chess Team.
Additional Information
• Chess sets, clocks, notations, pencils, and pens will be provided.
• Free game analysis will be provided by members of the UTRGV Chess Team after each round.
• Accommodation for participants with disabilities will be ensured.
• Upon timely request, separate rooms in proximity to the playing venue will be available for rent.
• Free parking.
