Q & A with Dr. Maria Elena Valdes Corbeil, Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning
What are your research interests and research achievements?
My research interests are centered around emerging instructional technologies and strategies for enhancing the online learning experience. More specifically, my research focuses on strategies and best practices for improving course design and facilitation to: enhance teacher presence, social presence, and learner engagement in online learning environments, and the implementation of digital badges for engaging and motivating online learners while enhancing their professional qualifications for career advancement. I have also recently participated in scholarship on current issues in the field of Educational Technology, such as the use of the E-Learning Framework (Khan, 2005) to facilitate microlearning; and the validation of a digital pedagogy assessment of teacher preparation candidates. Recent research achievements include earning an international publication award, as well as publishing: a co-edited, scholarly book; a book chapter and having one in press; a peer-reviewed international conference proceedings; and a peer-reviewed international conference presentation. Please see a list of scholarly achievements from 2021-2022 below.

How does your work align with UTRGV’s and CEP’s strategic plans?
My scholarship helps me promote the CEP mission, specifically to “engage in continuous improvement through curricular and technological innovation in order to remain responsive to the changing educational and global reality,” and “lead through evidence-based decision making and data literacy in order to share our story with the academic and broader research communities, as well as our public school partners, families, and policy makers.” I believe that to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s learners, I can no longer merely stay informed of current technologies, best practices, and instructional strategies; I must be strides ahead of them. The way to achieve this is to proactively engage in scholarship, research, and ongoing conversations with students, colleagues, and other professionals. Also, by collaborating with colleagues at UTRGV and around the world, I can share knowledge and inform my teaching and scholarship from different perspectives in ways that benefit my teaching and service. In addition, I have had the fortuitous opportunity to disseminate my scholarship at international conferences and publish in books, book chapters, and journal articles. This helps promote the university and focus attention on the work we are doing at UTRGV.
What are your current projects?
I currently have a micro-lesson redesign research project with Joseph Rene Corbeil (UTRGV) and a researcher and educational technology professional from Turkey. Two UTRGV colleagues and I are also continuing work on our project to research College of Education faculty’s integration of technology and knowledge and implementation of the ISTE technology standards.
