About Us

Our Mission and Vision

The Department of Teaching and Learning is committed to student success and providing resources and support for faculty to engage in teaching, research, and service, with an emphasis on community engagement in the Rio Grande Valley. It is this collaborative spirit that guides all we do. We believe in the power of education to transform our community.

As the Department of Teaching and Learning at the largest Hispanic Serving Institution in the Continental US, we pride ourselves on being a major producer of bilingual and Latinx teachers, instructional coaches, curriculum leaders, and education researchers for the region, the state of Texas, and beyond.

Who are we?

We are an eclectic group with a passion for teacher education, curriculum and instruction, and curriculum and education research. We provide many different professional perspectives toward our work including those of human development and identity, critical theory and critical race theory, constructivist subject area teaching, cultural studies and multicultural education, practical and narrative curriculum, and of course, an understanding that affect and lifelong learning is a part of teaching and learning at all levels.

What inspires us?

We are inspired by the challenges and potentials of public education and education writ large. Including in this inspiration are specific faculty’s focus on making a difference in schools, bringing education to all students, subject area education (language arts, social studies, math, and science), education and social science research, service to the community and university, service to professional organizations, working toward equity and social justice in classrooms, and the production of Latinx teachers for the Valley, the state, the region, and beyond.
