Teachers Preparation for Student Learning: Training teachers within an authentic K-12 classroom experience hold tremendous promise in effectively preparing them to adopt a solution-based frame of thinking with a focus on student learning outcomes. The key to developing this mindset is receiving strong mentorship and support during this process. UTRGV PREP-A employs university-affiliated experts and experienced teachers to serve teaching candidates with a high level of support as they progress through the program and develop as professional educators.



The K-12 classroom-based teacher preparation includes a face-to-face 4-week PREP Academy Induction Camp, ongoing mentorship in fall and spring that includes hybrid, online, Saturday inquiry reflection sessions, and formative and summative performance-based assessments.

PREP-A is a highly selective, one-year alternative pathway to the teaching profession with a focus on practitioner inquiry and reflection, with an increased level of support from an experienced clinical professors in practice.


  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S. 
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale ( May be verified as: posted on official transcript from accredited university OR in the last 60 semester hours of coursework attempted.) 
  • Interview and Presentation (information is forthcoming) 
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation (professional references or character reference) 
  • Criminal Background Check 
  • Pass PACT Content Test 


Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT) Eligibility
PREP-A, as a highly selective program for teacher preparation, requires the passing of an appropriate content test (PACT) for admission. However, it is important to note that if you have been admitted to a teacher education program (university-based or other alternative certification program) you are not eligible to take the PACT; therefore not eligible to be admitted to PREP-A. Additionally, PREP-A is not accepting transfer candidates.

Fill the application hereThe application deadline is June 29, 2018 for Fall 2018 PREP-A. If you are approved to attend the program, you will receive an email from the selection committee by July 6, 2018 which will also include the links to the installment payments. In order to expedite the approval process, please ensure that all required information is included before submitting the application online. You will be able to access the application at a later time to update and add any missing pieces of information. However, all updates have to be completed before June 29th to be considered for the program.

  1. The program begins Monday, July 9 with the PREP-A Induction Camp ending on Friday, August 10.

  2. Upon completion of the PREP-A Induction Camp, teacher candidates will be able to choose among two pathways:

    1. 2018-2019 Full-time internship (teacher of record) with school district and follows school calendar with last day of school according to district calendar. Must be employed by school district as teacher. PREP-A does not secure employment for teacher candidates.

    2. Fall 2018: Clinical teaching option. Complete a full semester of supervised clinical teaching with supervision. Placement will be assigned by PREP-A.

Those that have cleared all the prerequisites and completed the application by June 20th will be eligible for the $500 discount on the course fee.

The registration fee for PREP-A is $5500. If you have cleared all the prerequisites and received an approval letter to register for PREP-A.

Note: If you are applying for the Continuing Education Private Loan to cover the registration fee for a non-credit continuing education program, then please use UTRGV Continuing Education School Code: 00359902. The loan amount you note in the application cannot exceed the open enrollment fee noted on our website. Minimum for the loans must be $500.00. Some service charges may apply.


  • Do I need to have a bachelor’s degree to participate in this program?
    Yes. This program is a pathway to the teaching profession for those who have already earned their bachelor’s degree and are interested in becoming certified after college.

  • What if I meet all criteria for the program, but do not have a 3.0-4.0 GPA?
    Many factors go into the selection of teaching candidates, so we encourage anyone who is interested to apply for the program as you have nothing to lose! It’s very important to note that you MUST pass the PACT test for admission by deadline.
  • Can I apply for financial aid or loans to help pay for PREP-A?
    No. As our programs are continuing education and professional development, and cannot be applied toward university credit, they are typically ineligible for federal aid and student loans. We will have installment payment plan available for PREP-A fall 2018 cohort where the total fee of $5500 will be broken down to monthly payments depending on route sought with program.

  • When is the deadline to apply for this program?
    PREP-A Spring 2018 applications are currently open and the application deadline is set for June 29, 2018. Once you are approved, you will receive an email from the selection committee with links to online registration and payments for this cohort.
