Certificate in Web Design
Participants will learn how to build robust and navigable website infrastructure using HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and information architecture. Beyond infrastructure development, participants will also learn to control presentational elements of a web page and build web page responsiveness using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
Throughout the program, participants will be presented with the opportunity to complete a scenario-based web design capstone alongside an experienced practitioner to integrate and apply their web design competencies learned in class. This course will serve as a stepping stone to learn more advanced web design practices and build on foundational web design programming knowledge.

This course is designed for participants who are new to web design and interested in the real-world application of web design to create user-friendly and responsive websites.
Note: PEWD program participants should be 18 years or older.

Session Details:
In this introduction session, we will discuss the fundamental aspects of Web Design, review course learning objectives, assign online course content, and explore the capstone/case study exercise.
In this session, participants will learn to utilize HyperText Markup Language (HTML) to create webpages and web application interfaces. Participants will also be guided through the website design process, from identifying content strategy and information architecture to choosing a layout and other design elements such as visual hierarchy, whitespace/negative space, color, and typography.
Learning Objectives- Explain how HTML communicates the structure of information via the internet
- Understand the basic structure of HTML documents
- Recognize HTML syntax
- Apply HTML elements and attributes to a webpage
In this session, participants will learn how to use the basic features of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Participants will practice the application of CSS in web design by learning to control the presentation of elements on a page, including their color, dimensions, positions, and behavior.
Learning Objectives- Use selectors and declarations to create CSS rules
- Write and link an external style sheet to a webpage
- Apply color to page elements using a variety of color systems
- Create single and multiple classes to style elements
- Select a variety of fonts and apply sizing to different page elements
In this session, participants will be introduced to responsive web design (RWD) by reviewing basic principles and foundational techniques for designing websites that are viewable on all devices. After completing the session, participants will be able to create custom CSS layouts and use media queries to optimize websites for different screen sizes.
Learning Objectives- Explain the concepts and principles of responsive web design
- Define the viewport and identify how to configure a site for responsive design
- Differentiate between the CSS box and border-box models
- Calculate the widths of elements on a page using the box model and border-box model
- Understand the fundamental concepts of grid-based layout systems
In this closing session, participants will have the chance to review and share lessons learned in the course, attend a Q&A session with our instructor, and wrap-up course content.
