Session Details

 

In this introduction session, we will discuss the significance of data analytics in making informed decisions, review course learning objectives, and explore the capstone/case study exercise.

 
 
Data Quality and Integrity:

In this session, you will learn to utilize key Microsoft Excel tools used for data collection and cleansing. Participants will learn how to clean databases and conduct meaningful sorting and filtering to facilitate informed decision-making.

Online Learning Outcomes:

• Explain why quantitative analysis and analytics are important in decision making

• Explain the types of decisions that can be made analytically in an organizational setting

• Describe different decision-making models and tools

• Identify the fundamental concepts of measurement including levels of measurement, reliability, and validity, errors, measurement, and information bias

• Explain how quality data affects decision making (GIGO principle)

• Describe methods of ensuring the quality of data

• Evaluate techniques for ensuring accurate research design

• Describe how research is used in different settings: business, education, health care, the military, government, nonprofits

• Explain data management techniques including transforming data, recoding data, and handling missing data

• Apply appropriate decision-making techniques to a specific case

 
 
Data Summarization & Visualization:

In this session, you will learn how to use Pivot Tables and Charts to visualize and present data for decision-making. Participants will learn how to use Microsoft Excel to conduct descriptive statistics to summarize data and create histograms for frequency analysis.

• Describe common problems with, and misuse of, statistics

• Identify criteria for evaluating statistics

• Explain the key fundamentals of probability and their real-world application

• Identify the fundamental concepts of descriptive statistics (populations and samples, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, measures of distribution) and their real-world applications

• Select appropriate graphic methods for displaying descriptive statistics

• Explain the fundamental concepts of inferential statistics and their real-world application

• Evaluate a scenario in order to determine the appropriate statistic to use

• Apply fundamental statistics to a real-world situation

• Evaluate the appropriateness of statistics used

• Use statistics to identify the most appropriate decision alternative

• Translate statistical data into a graphical presentation based on a brief case study

 
 
Predictive and Inferential Analysis:

In this session, you will learn how to use Microsoft Excel tools to conduct forecasts for predictive analysis. Participants will learn how to use Microsoft Excel to conduct statistical analyses such as correlation coefficients to determine relationships between variables and simple linear regression to determine expected changes in an observed variable.

• Describe the various forecasting techniques and the benefits and limitations

• Describe the various types of regression analysis and their real-world application

• Analyze the results of a regression analysis

• Describe common problems with multiple regression

• Describe other statistical techniques and their real-world application

• Explain the advantages and disadvantages of various statistical techniques

• Choose a statistical technique based on a brief case study

 
 

In this closing session, participants will have the chance to review and share lessons learned in the course, attend a Q&A session with our instructor, and wrap-up course content.

This comprehensive hybrid certificate program introduces participants to universal data analysis techniques, tools, and processes needed to facilitate cross-functional and informed decision-making. Participants will learn to ensure data quality and integrity, produce descriptive statistics, visualize data, and conduct predictive and inferential analyses. In addition to the 15-hour online portion of this program, participants will learn to utilize Microsoft Excel to clean, create, visualize, and analyze data in a live classroom environment. Throughout the program, participants will be presented with the opportunity to complete a comprehensive capstone project to integrate and apply data analysis competencies learned in class

Capstone: Visualization Report

The capstone will encompass a raw, unformatted, and unorganized data set to be sorted and cleaned (Session 1), analyzed (Session 2), and inferred upon (Session 3). The capstone will ensure that participants can effectively utilize and integrate all course competencies in a simulated, real-world environment. Participants will present a Visualization Report for review and receive feedback.

Online Instruction: 15 Hours

 

This course is designed for learners interested in real-world tools and techniques to capture meaningful data and transform it into valuable information for their organization. This is especially suited for managers, decision-makers, and professionals taking on data analysis or business intelligence roles in their organization.

 

This course requires a basic understanding of Microsoft Excel.
