Personal Trainer Certification

This course provides participants with the most current, foundational knowledge, training and competency testing to certify them to practice as professional certified fitness trainers.

UTRGV Continuing Education has partnered with World Instructor Training Schools (W.I.T.S.) to offer a comprehensive Personal Trainer Certification program that offers students the latest knowledge in a range of topics including:

Taught over an 8-week period, this course includes 16 hours of lecture in topics that include anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition, and legal and safety issues, as well as 16 hours of hands-on practical fitness labs that offer participants exercise prescription, fitness testing and health assessment, using fitness equipment, role playing drills, presentation skills, and mastering the art and science of personal training.

The national exams are held on the 9th week, and participants now have the option of adding a 2ND CERTIFICATION with the completion of a 30-hour advanced internship.

Program Summary

  • 16 hours of lecture- key topics that include biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage, and health assessment.
  • 16 hours of hands-on practical training labs with role playing drills on exercises, presentation skills, etc. to professionally master the position.
  • Additional 2ND Certification Option – Complete the 30 hour internship and receive the advanced Level 2 certification. 
  • Show a current CPR/AED card to demonstrate your emergency readiness.

Certification Information

Level 1 - Nationally Certified Personal Trainer: For candidates who are prepared to sit for the written and practical exam only. 
Level 2 - Nationally Certified Personal Trainer: Successfully pass your Level 1 exams, and complete the 30-hour advanced internship. (Note: Students will be provided with a list of gyms in the area who have relationships with W.I.T.S., but must secure internships themselves.)

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate
  • CPR/AED is needed to sit for the exams.

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand and describe basic anatomy, kinesiology and exercise physiology.
  2. Assess an individual's level of fitness using ACSM guidelines.
  3. Design and customize exercise programs.
  4. Demonstrate proper execution of resistance, cardiorespiratory and flexibility exercises.
  5. Identify and demonstrate at least one strength exercise for every major muscle group.
  6. Explain ACSM and AHA recommendations for cardiovascular exercise.
