Course Description:

One important element of a paralegal’s job, which is of ultimate importance to the firm—is his or her writing. Whether organizing records, preparing legal documents, or communicating with experts for trial, paralegals must become skilled communicators when representing their legal team and employer. 
Designed to help both experienced paralegals and beginning students refine their writing skills and boost their ability to communicate effectively, this 24-hour program will concentrate on the preparation and critique of legal documents. Participants will demonstrate the following skills through successful completion of all required coursework and assignments: 
  • Identify and frame a simple legal issue, and identify the facts that relate to it;
  • Conduct legal research using a computer-assisted legal research tool, such as WESTLAW; and
o    Use citations in written legal material;
o    The rules of evidence and civil procedure; 
o    Preparation of discovery matter, such as Interrogatories, Requests for Admissions, and Requests for Production of Documents;
o    Preparation of legal documents; and
o    Preparation and critique of legal memoranda.
o    Construct a legal brief for a hypothetical case scenario.
Required Materials: 
  • Basic Legal Writing for Paralegals, 3rd edition (Author: Samborn, Yelin)
  • A Uniform System of Citation (aka "The Bluebook"), most recent edition

    Jennifer Morales, RN, JD, Esq. is a long-time Edinburg Resident, and graduate of Edinburg North High School. She is both a registered nurse and an attorney, and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas-Pan American and earned her Juris Doctorate from the State University of New York-Buffalo. Jennifer has been practicing law since 2008, and is a member of the Texas Bar Association. After prior experience as an individual practitioner in criminal, family, and immigration law, she currently serves as a Regulatory Enforcement Attorney for the Health and Human Services Commission and is the founder of Morales & Associates, PLLC.
