Keynote Speaker: Gabriela Gonzalez
Gabriela González is a professor of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State University searching for gravitational waves with the LIGO team. She was born in Córdoba, Argentina, where she studied before pursuing her Ph.D. in Syracuse University, obtained in 1995. She was a staff scientist in the LIGO group at MIT, joined the faculty at Penn State in 1997 and moved to LSU in 2001. She has received awards from the American Physical Society, the American Astronomical Society and the National Academy of Sciences and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the US and Argentinian National Academies of Sciences. She has been a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration since 1997, served as spokesperson in 2011-2017, and participated in the announcement of the discovery of gravitational waves in 2016. Her group works on LIGO instrument development, reducing noise sources, and data diagnostics.

Conference Information:
The 2023 College of Sciences Annual Research Conference will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023 on the Brownsville campus. The activities will be centered in and around the El Gran Salon in the Student Union and nearby rooms and lecture halls. The conference features student presentations and posters, networking opportunities, graduate program information, a job fair and Q&A with COS scientists and a luncheon of for the Women in Science Network (WISE). The awards for the best presentations and posters will be framed by a keynote address.
The conference offers an opportunity to students to present their original research, scholarly activities and creative projects to the university community. It will consist of oral and poster presentations. We are excited to fully embrace the STEAM idea by accepting science-related arts and creative projects into this year’s conference.
Mission:
The mission of the College of Sciences Annual Research Conference is to serve as a forum for dissemination of new scientific knowledge and discussion of scholarly ideas to foster interaction among students, faculty, and the local industry and community. The conference invites poster and oral presentations of scholarly work from all disciplines. Sessions will be organized by discipline or by themes. All UTRGV undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff, as well as the public, are welcome to attend.
