Coordinated Admission Program (CAP) Advising Guide

As a Coordinated Admissions Program (CAP) student, you are well on your way to becoming a Longhorn. CAP Advising at UTRGV is designed to support your academic and personal growth as you prepare to continue your education at the University of Texas at Austin. With the support of your academic advisor, you’ll identify personal goals and improve your abilities, not just as a student, but as a world changer.

Over the required summer, fall, and spring terms, you’ll refine your academic abilities, experience personal growth, and prepare yourself for the next chapter of your educational journey. During CAP advising sessions you’ll:

  • Identify opportunities and resources to assist you with being successful
  • Discuss your progress towards completing CAP requirements
  • Identify solutions to any difficulties or obstacles you may be encountering
  • Develop and assess your personal and educational goals to prepare you for transitioning to the University of Texas at Austin

Partnership for Success

As an admitted undergraduate student, you will partner with us to build your overall understanding of UTRGV and learn how to be successful at the University of the 21st Century. Along the way, you'll work with us to discover new academic adventures and craft an educational experience unique to you! Below, we offer what each of us brings to the table to ensure your success at UTRGV!

Your Role and Responsibilities

As with any academic support, a key element in your success is your active participation and engagement. In order for you to have the best advising experience possible, we expect that you’ll:

  • Become personally responsible for being knowledgeable of and following CAP enrollment requirements for summer, fall, and spring, including course modality requirements.
  • Meet with your assigned academic advisor a minimum of two (2) times each semester.
  • Keep scheduled appointments and arrive at least 10 minutes early.
  • Accept responsibility for your choices, decisions, and the resulting consequences.
  • Become personally responsible for being knowledgeable of and following CAP requirements, including submitting required documents such as essays and transcripts.
  • Communicate questions and concerns with your assigned academic advisor, as well as UT Austin contacts.
  • Actively engage and participate during each session.
  • Complete 30 approved semester hours of coursework (including a mathematics course other than College Algebra) with at least a 3.2 grade point average.

Academic Advisor Responsibilities

  • We will treat you respectfully and maintain confidentiality.
  • We will be adequately accessible via email, advising hours, and scheduled appointments.
  • We will understand and effectively communicate CAP requirements in addition to UTRGV policies and procedures.
  • We will encourage and guide you as you gain the skills to develop clear and attainable educational plans.
  • We will help you monitor your progress towards meeting your goals.
  • We will relay information provided by UT Austin as it becomes available.
  • We will provide you information about strategies for using UTRGV resources and services.

CAP Contact for Academic Advising at UTRGV

Keep in Mind

Advising Hold Session Attendance Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
An advising hold has been placed on your academic record as an accountability measure. Upon completion of your second advising session each semester, your hold will be removed. Session attendance is mandatory. You're encouraged to schedule and complete all meetings in advance of course registration for each upcoming semester. Students who have not yet met TSI readiness requirements are not in a position to meet CAP enrollment requirements for each term. At UTRGV, students who have not yet met TSI readiness requirements must enroll in mandatory developmental courses that are not approved for CAP.

Resources for CAP Students

Our top priority is to position you to achieve your academic and professional goals. That includes giving you all the support you need along the way for you to thrive! Here you will find a comprehensive list of academic and campus resources . Take advantage of some of them (or all of them!) during your time at UTRGV.

Here are additional resources that may be of benefit to you as you complete your first year at UTRGV and prepare to transition to UT – Austin.
