ADVANCE Summer Writing Retreat

ADVANCE Women of Color - UTRGV


The Advance Women of Color Summer Writing Retreat (SWR) provides a means of support for the research careers of women faculty in NSF supported disciplines. The overall goal of this project is to extend for adaptation the components of the JSU ADVANCE SWR to support the scholarly productivity and career advancement of women of color at six other minority serving institutions and thereby create multi-institutional networks that significantly expand the resources that are available to enhance the scholarly productivity and career enhancement of faculty at the partner institutions.

The residential week of the 2016 UTRGV Summer Writing Retreat is scheduled for May 22-28, 2016. The retreat will be held on South Padre Island, TX at the Pearl South Padre Resort.


Participants are required to complete one of the following by the end of the Summer Writing Retreat experience: a grant proposal for submission to a funding agency, an article to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, or a book chapter.

The participant support provided is $3,000 plus travel, lodging, and subsistence during the one week retreat.

Participants are required to complete pre-retreat assignments and well as post-retreat, weekly updates on their projects to their accountability coaches during the 7-weeks following the in-residence portion of the retreat.

Application Requirements

  • Complete the online application by February 15, 2016.
  • Must have selected or begun a writing project, i.e., grant proposal, manuscript of a book chapter, or a research article to work on during the SWR.
  • Successful applicants will be notified by March 11, 2016 and must accept and sign an agreement by March 25, 2016.
