The 100% online UTRGV Master of Science in Engineering Management program is designed to prepare future leaders in engineering management, focusing on skills needed in planning, organization, leadership, control in production, research and services organizations. Through this program, students are provided an opportunity to strengthen their technological education and acquire the skills to manage and lead engineers and engineering systems.

Engineering Management is a broad field and can cover a wide range of technical and managerial topics such as: Leadership and Organization Management, Operations Research; and Supply Chain Management, Project Management, Quality Management and Decision Science, and Industrial Cost Systems.

Program Goals:

  1. Develop engineering management skills in planning, organization, and control of engineering projects and engineering systems.
  2. Design, develop and evaluate engineering systems and models using technical methods and approaches, to improve business performance measures.
  3. Apply theories and tools in quality management to enhance performance of an organization.
  4. Develop fundamental skills in negotiations, marketing, decision analysis and risk assessment for effective engineering management.
  5. Evaluate and apply engineering leadership skills when advancing into management roles.
  6. Evaluate economic and financial structures, and their implications to the engineering systems.
  7. Enhance efficiency of resource utilization through optimization algorithms and lean models to support engineering operations.
  8. Develop material requirement planning (MRP) including inventory models, dispatching and scheduling, material planning and forecasting.
  9. Conduct research, analyze, and write technical reports or publications in their chosen area of Engineering Management.

This course provides a background in quantitative techniques in Engineering Management with emphasis on industrial cost analysis models and techniques. Financial models and methods are discussed with emphasis on capital budgeting and topics related to advanced engineering economics. Valuation and reporting methods are reviewed. Basic costing practices are discussed along with cost modeling and control methods.
Introduces philosophies, tools and methodologies of TQM, quality systems (ISO 9000, ISO 14000, 6-sigma), bench marking, quality function deployment, Taguchi method, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and management tools
Concepts in mathematical modeling, stochastic processes, queuing theory, linear programming, integer programming, dynamic programming, non-linear programming, and inventory models.
Fundamental principles of planning, estimating, budgeting, implementing, evaluation, and controlling engineering and research projects. Common engineering management concerns such as labor scheduling, human resources management, and related governmental compliance are also explored.
