Dear UTRGV Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I am delighted and privileged to welcome you to the Fall 2023 semester. While it is difficult to believe that I am already three months into my tenure as UTRGV's Provost, I am not surprised at how fast I have fallen in love with this community. The Rio Grande Valley, with its rich culture, history, and entrepreneurial nature, has truly captivated me. And it is this unique binational, bicultural, and bilingual environment that distinguishes our university from others.
In my first message to you this past June, I said that UTRGV represents the best in higher education today. As we move forward, let us not overlook the remarkable achievements that define UTRGV. From our academics and research to our champion chess and athletic programs, your accomplishments are the product of a steadfast commitment to excellence. For those of you who are sports fans, and support UTRGV, I look forward to this year’s competitions in every sport. And, like many of you, I am eagerly awaiting the chance to get my orange on for our football games, tailgates, and pageantry. "Rally the Valley" is not just a slogan; it embodies the Vaquero spirit and connects our entire region.
Our students continue to shine as a beacon of inspiration and promise. Their diverse backgrounds, talents, and aspirations are the vibrant pieces in the UTRGV mosaic. Their passion fuels our purpose and reminds us of our devotion to this institution. Equally impressive is the skill and dedication of our faculty — the award-winning teachers and outstanding scholars and researchers in every area of human knowledge and creativity. Together, our students and faculty lead us into the future. I am particularly proud to highlight individuals like Karen Lozano, whose contributions have elevated our institution's stature, near and far. While we have many notable programs, the collective efforts of all faculty and staff are what nurture imagination, expression, and discovery. All this, including the critically acclaimed books and creative works produced within the university, are points of pride and should be celebrated.
My overarching goal is to enhance UTRGV's deep-rooted connection to the communities we serve. This bond is part of our DNA and underscores our critical mission. Though there are always obstacles on the path to greatness, I know we will overcome them and continue building our legacy.
I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to you for choosing UTRGV as your academic home. As we begin this new semester, may it be a time filled with growth, wonder, and memorable experiences.
Sincerely,
Luis H. Zayas, Ph.D.
Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
