  • CLEP (College Level Examination Program)

    CLEP Test Information

    Students can earn course credit at UTRGV in a wide variety of subject areas through CLEP Subject Examinations, which are standardized computer-based 90-minute multiple-choice test.

    IMPORTANT! UTRGV does not grant CLEP credit for a class in which you have received a letter grade. CLEP credit cannot be used to clear Financial Aid deficiencies.

    RETEST POLICY: The COLLEGE BOARD policies require that you wait 3 months before retaking the same CLEP examination.

Featuring the new test-taker friendly design and new questions, the revised test more closely reflects the kind of thinking you'll do in graduate or business school and demonstrates that you are ready for graduate-level work.

    The PRAXIS I Academic Skills Assessments are designed to be taken early in a student's college career to measure reading, writing, and mathematics skills. The reading, writing, and mathematics assessments are available through either a paper-based or computer-based format.

  • TSI Assessment

    The TSI Assessment is a college readiness test delivered through the Accuplacer system, specifically designed by the College Board to meet the requirements set forth by the Texas Legislature and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

    If you are an incoming college student in Texas, you are required to take the TSI Assessment — unless you are already exempt (contact your counselor or advisor) — to determine your readiness for college-level work. Based on how you perform, you may either be enrolled in a college-level course that matches your skill level or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve your skills and prepare you for success in college-level courses.

    You must complete the TSI Pre-Assessment Activity before you can take the TSI Assessment.

  • TOEFL iBT(International TOEFL)

    The TOEFL iBT tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success.

    Important Notes

    Test Dates: Please visit or call 1-800-GO-TOEFL (1-800-468-6335) for available test dates.

    Registration: Register to take the TOEFL iBT using one of the following methods.

    Online: For faster and convenient service, register at ETS TOEFL. A valid credit card is required (American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, or VISA), or an electronic check if you have a bank account in the U.S.
    **The deadline to register online is 7 days before the test date. **

    BY PHONE: You must call to register at least 7 days before the test date. Valid credit card is required. Call 1-800-GO-TOEFL (1-800-468-6335).

    BY MAIL: If you do not want to register online or by phone fill out the Registration Form located in the center of the Information and Registration Bulletin or online at ETS TOEFL.

    Walk-in registration is NOT available for TOEFL iBT.
    Fees: $195 (U.S.)
    Appointment Length: 4.5 hours.

    Score Reports: ETS will send an examinee score record to you and official score reports to designated institutions 15 business days after you take the test. You can view you scores online for free. Please visit ETS TOEFL for online posting and mailing dates. Test results cannot be given sooner than 15 business days after the test date. Test Centers do not provide receipts or printed score reports. Examinees must select their score recipients during registration. They cannot be selected at the test center.

    Retests: An examinee may take the TOEFL iBT test more than once. Each test date is considered a separate administration. An examinee is allowed to test only once per day.

  • WebCAPE

    Foreign Language Proficiency Test

    The WebCAPE is a foreign language proficiency test approved by The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Department of Modern Languages for demonstrating second language proficiency in the following languages: Spanish, French or German. The purpose of WebCAPE is to help students meet the language proficiency and graduation requirement which is currently part of the undergraduate degree programs. Please speak to your advisor to see if this exam is suitable for you.
