Quality And Safety

Gamma Probe Localization

We strive to bring world class medical care to the Rio Grande Valley. We do this by various means. Since the two important nerves that control the voice travel near the thyroid and parathyroid we look directly at your vocal cords before and after surgery with a laryngoscope. We do this as a quality measure since your voice is very important to us. We also perform our own high resolution ultrasound examinations to personally evaluate you in our office. We can then perform any necessary procedures including biopsy in order to personalize your care. We do this all at your first appointment to save you time and money. We also keep a data base tracking of our outcomes and we are contributing members to The Collaborative Endocrine Surgery Quality Improvement Program (CESQIP) so we can continue to improve patient care. The latest technologies for localization are at our disposal including four dimensional CT scans and Sestamibi scans so we can perform minimally invasive focused radio guided parathyroid surgery.

Since we use the latest techniques before surgery we can often perform a minimally invasive, focused surgery to keep risks at a minimum. One of those techniques is the use of the gamma probe to help us locate parathyroid tumors.  We can even check your blood levels of certain hormones during surgery to confirm our results. We use intraoperative nerve monitoring to continually assess vocal cord function during surgery to minimize the risk of nerve injury.

One of the troublesome complications after thyroid and parathyroid surgery is low calcium. We use a proven regimen of oral Calcium and Vitamin D, if needed, that prevents problems after surgery.  We also check your parathyroid hormone levels after surgery to help guide any needed treatment.

Endocrine Tumor Board

Once we have surgically addressed a cancer we personally work with the endocrinologists, radiologists, and pathologists to ensure you get the best treatment plan. We have a monthly multidisciplinary meeting to discuss patients and coordinate a long term care strategy that is best suited for that individual. We do all these things to provide the ultimate care here in the Rio Grande Valley.
