  • What is the MD/MS in Bioethics Program?

    The MD/MS in Bioethics program is the first dual degree program that is offered completely through UTRGV. Students who enroll in the MD/MS in Bioethics program will gain advanced learning and develop skills in bioethics and social justice. The MS in Bioethics program is offered as a fully online program allowing for maximum flexibility in completing coursework.

    The program of study has been specifically designed so that UTRGV School of Medicine students will be able to complete both the MD and MS in Bioethics degrees within four years of study.

  • Who can apply?

    Students applying to the medical degree program will indicate an interest in the MD/MS in Bioethics program on the application. The student must first be accepted into the medical degree program at UTRGV prior to a decision being made on admission to the dual degree program.

  • I am a second year medical student; can I apply for the dual degree?

    No. MS second year students will not be able to enroll in this dual degree program. Students may take courses in Bioethics as electives or apply to the MS in Bioethics program but would not be able to complete the entire degree program during their medical studies.

  • How does the program work?

    The MS in Bioethics degree requires a completion of 30 credit hours: 27 course credit hours and 3 credit hours of Capstone Masters Project. For this dual degree program, 9 hours of your medical school curriculum will dually count towards the 27 course credit hours needed. The remaining 18 course credit hours and 3 credit hours of Capstone Masters Project will be taken throughout the 4 years of medical school.

  • Can I take a year off from medical school to do my MS in Bioethics and then finish medical school?

    No, the UTRGV SOM MD/MS in Bioethics dual degree program is set up to finish in the 4 years you are in medical school. This requires extra coursework, time, and commitment to finish within those 4 years, which is why this program is not for all students.

  • What is the additional cost of the MD/MS in Bioethics Dual Degree?

    The approximate additional cost for the dual degree program is $8,960 for the 4 years. This reflects a savings of $3,836 for the 9-shared SOM hours. Our dedicated financial aid officer will assist you with details.
