Dean

Krouse comes to the Valley from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he served as the senior associate dean for clinical affairs; president of Temple University Physicians; professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery; and director of the Head and Neck Institute at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine. He also served as associate dean for Graduate Medical Education from 2012 to 2015.

Dr. Krouse graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Rochester, New York. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He received a Master of Business Administration from the Fox School of Business at Temple University in 2014.

He completed his internship in surgery at Beth Israel Hospital and his residency training in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School in Boston. He is board certified in otolaryngology.

Michael comes to UTRGV School of Medicine from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where, since 2015, he had been serving as the Director of Finance in the Office of the Dean for the School of Medicine & Provost. In this role, he was responsible for the funds flow, budget, and capital budget for the School of Medicine. Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Michael spent 8 years at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he held various leadership roles across the finance, operations, resource allocation and planning functions within the Office of the Provost/Dean of the School of Medicine.

Michael earned his undergraduate Finance degree from Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. He also earned an MBA from the University of Houston at Clear Lake in 2012.

Chief of Staff

Sofia Hernandez is the Chief of Staff for the UTRGV Office of Health Affairs and School of Medicine. She also serves as the Chief Diversity Officer for Health Affairs. Before joining UTRGV, she was the Vice President for Government Affairs and Graduate Medical Education at DHR Health.  Hernandez has more than 25 years’ experience working in health care and public policy having worked for United Healthcare, Hidalgo County, and State Senators Juan Hinojosa, Eddie Lucio, Judith Zaffirini and the late Carlos Truan.

Sofia earned her undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin.  She also earned her MPA from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

As Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Dentino joins the executive leadership team to help provide support to the chairs and deans in their teaching, research, clinical and administrative responsibilities.

Dr. Dentino is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the American Geriatrics Society (AGSF), the American Psychiatric Association (FAPA) and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM). He also represents UTRGV nationally as an elected member of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and holds both the Colonel H. William Card and the Frank Boggus Professorship.

Senior Vice President and Vice Dean for Business and Program Development

Dr. Alice K. Marcee is the Senior Vice President for Business and Program Development for the Division of Health Affairs and a Vice Dean in the School of Medicine. Before joining UTRGV, she served as the Assistant Vice Chancellor & Counsel for Academic and Health Affairs at The University of Texas System.  Prior to joining The University of Texas System, Dr. Marcee was legal counsel with UT Southwestern. She has over twenty years’ experience in academic medicine serving in various roles from faculty to legal counsel to strategic health system initiatives.  Her experience includes developing public-private academic partnerships, negotiating complex health system affiliations and clinical operating agreements, providing bioethics counsel, structuring alternative payment models and acquiring physician practices. 

 

Dr. Marcee holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, magna cum laude, from Texas A&M University.

Deputy Chief Legal Officer

Joe is the Deputy Chief Legal Officer—Healthcare for UTRGV.  Since 2017 he has served as primary legal counsel for the UTRGV School of Medicine and the Division of Health Affairs.  Joe has over two decades of experience working in university health science centers and providing advice and counsel on complex legal issues affecting academic medical centers and teaching hospitals.  He previously served as Associate Vice President and Deputy Chief Legal Officer for The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston where he managed the day-to-day operations of the Department of Legal Affairs.  He also served as Managing Counsel for Health Affairs at Texas A&M University System, serving as counsel to Texas A&M Health Science Center.    

Joe earned his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law and his MBA from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
