What inspired you to become a doctor?
Medicine provides a unique combination of clinical practice and research. The opportunity to care for others while developing improved treatment methods cemented my early dreams of becoming a physician. I entered the Vaqueros MD program as a high school senior, which facilitated a smooth transition into medical school.
Why did you choose the UTRGV School of Medicine?
I was a part of the Vaqueros MD Pipeline Program. As a high school student, I knew medicine was the path for me, and an opportunity to pursue a medical degree in my hometown sounded surreal. Vaqueros MD provided me with immense guidance and opportunities during the transition from high school to medical school. The UTRGV School of Medicine takes a vested interest in its students through personal connections, resulting in student success. The School of Medicine has been nothing short of a blessing!
The UTRGV School of Medicine is a practicing academic medical institution. What aspect of academic medicine impacts you the most? (Educational, clinical, research, etc.)
With an interest in a specialty in Infectious Diseases, research is imperative. I plan on conducting research investigating the mechanisms by which antibiotic resistance is acquired and the unique characteristics of these stubborn bugs. This research will shed light on the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance and introduce alternative treatments. The UTRGV School of Medicine has provided numerous research opportunities and guidance to kick off my studies.
What specialties of medicine or research interest you the most? Why?
I plan on specializing in Infectious Diseases. Antibiotic resistance has shown an exponential increase globally, presenting physicians with the unique challenge of combating stubborn bugs and preventing the advent of further resistance. Infectious diseases balance clinical practice and research, providing me with the perfect mix.
What is one interesting fact others might not know about you?
I love the outdoors! If I am not studying, you will find me running, hiking, hunting, or anywhere else outside. This past summer, before starting medical school, I hiked 100 miles of the Colorado Trail!
