Garry Souffrant, MD, FACP

Biography

Dr.  Gary Souffrant is a board-certified Internist with decades of experience in clinical care, medical education, and public health. He earned his medical degree from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico and completed his internal medicine residency at Harlem Hospital with Columbia University in New York. He later pursued a pulmonary fellowship at Harlem Hospital, where he held multiple academic and clinical roles, including Assistant Attending and Clinical Director of the Pulmonary Clinic and the Charles P. Felton National TB Center. 

Dr. Souffrant currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Primary and Community Care Integrated Service Unit at the UTRGV School of Medicine. He also serves as Director of UT Health RGV’s Student and Employee Health Clinic and Director of the internal medicine program’s Continuity Clinic. He is a member of the Admission and Promotion Committee and a mentor to many students and residents.

Many of Dr. Souffrant’s publications cover tuberculosis, pulmonary disease, and health literacy. He is a humanist who is passionate about community service. He participates in many international missions and correctional health initiatives. He is fluent in French, Creole, Spanish, and English. He practices Tai Chi and enjoys photography.
