Why UTRGV?

Because as a senior in high school, despite being in Brownsville, UTRGV looked as though it could provide me with a good standing education. This and the added bonuses of being close to home and its affordable options, not to mention my culture surrounding the school, which helped me develop a deeper appreciation of its beauty.

The university’s convenient location allows me to spend valuable time with my family on both sides of the border. UTRGV gave me opportunities that I wouldn’t have found anywhere else.

I chose UTRGV because of the amazing experience I had while attending the UTRGV Mathematics and Science Academy. Through this high school program, I was able to be a full-time college student during my junior and senior year of high school. This allowed me to achieve a significant head start in my college career as well as earn a scholarship to UTRGV when I graduated high school. Why UTRGV?

UTRGV has always felt like home. When I was younger, I would accompany my older cousins to UTPA, now known as UTRGV. They would invite me to events at the university offered back in 2010, and that’s how I discovered that I wanted to be part of the university since I had been part of this community way before my college days. Also, because being part of UTRGV is the best of both worlds, you experience the ambiance of the Hispanic heritage while living in the U.S.

I have countless reasons why I love this university, but a few that I must highlight are as follows. The first being my mother and family members are alumni of the legacy institution UTPA, and I wanted to continue that tradition in my family to set the example for generations to come. Another reason would be the resources UTRGV provides. As a marketing major, I was seeking an employment opportunity that is tailored to my educational route. I am now employed by the Center for Student Involvement as a marketing specialist. Lastly, I enjoy seeing the diversity this campus provides from the student population to the opportunities, and the college experience.

Why UTRGV?

I chose UTRGV because I wanted to stay close to my family and I also liked that this university has variety of career options. Over the years I have witnessed how the university continues to expand and provide more opportunities for the students. I decided to give back to the university by working in the Student Involvement Office and becoming a mentor to incoming students because UTRGV has proven to me numerous times how much care and support they provide to us, and I wanted to make sure the new students knew too. During the pandemic, for example UTRGV provided cash grants, care packages to students. When I graduated with my first bachelors in Rehabilitation Services, I was not able to participate in an in-person ceremony. I was devastated, however UTRGV made sure to provide a virtual ceremony for all Fall 2020 graduates and they sent in the mail our cap, tassel, and stole for the graduates. This just shows how UTRGV continues to support their students during the pandemic.

Why UTRGV?

I knew UTRGV was the place I wanted to pursue my education since I was 18. At that age, I decided to move from Reynosa, a low-income area, to Edinburg to learn and fluently speak English. Once I settled into Edinburg, the University caught my eye instantly, since I had never seen building this big in my hometown. I felt like I was in a city of its own and I felt the need to be part of this large community. For me this was sort of a dream university, kind of like the ones I would only see on TV and movies. What made me feel more comfortable and assured is the fact that UTRGV offers a bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate education which has made the transition process for me, as a first-generation student, easier.

Why UTRGV?

There remains a weighty stigma behind choosing to stay in your hometown for your undergrad, especially when all those close to you are leaving. However, I hold a deep love for the Valley. Our region has a history of suffering from a critical brain drain, meaning many individuals seeking to further their educational and professional careers end up leaving to pursue better opportunities. Though, if our native mesquite trees and nopales have whispered anything to those willing to listen, it is that La 956 produces life that grows and thrives in the heat of adversity and arid barrenness. A natural and effervescent demonstration of a beautiful and rare strength that has no need for outside intervention because all that is necessary is held within and deeply rooted. I desire to help shift the looming narrative because there is such beauty to behold here. UTRGV has so many amazing things to offer, especially in the realm of education. Now, nearing the end of my undergrad race, I have no regrets behind my choice. I have had a myriad of professors and experiences that are actively expanding the territory of Latinx learners and empowering me to aid in the fruitful undertaking of showing the true beauty of our region. My progression as both a leaner and mindful individual has only improved since my journey began three years ago.

Why UTRGV?

I chose UTRGV because it’s home and it’s just as impactful as any other university. Many choose to go to school out of their hometown or home-state where the same experiences, same classes, and same people you live is the same as I have here. It’s never the name of the university that attracts, it’s the people. I’ve visited other schools and institutions where I didn’t feel where I needed to be. UTRGV and the people that’ve helped built its reputation has helped me realized where I should be and it’s here as a proud Vaquero.

I chose to stay in my hometown and attend UTRGV because I take pride of my roots and where I am from. UTRGV at times tends to be overlooked and a lot of talent leaves the RGV. Why UTRGV?

Selecting a university that is aligned with a student’s dream can oftentimes be challenging because it depends on analyzing academic rigor, major availability, cost, affordability, student life, and the feeling of connectedness and acceptability a student wishes to experience when they visit the institution for the first time. While exploring the various options I had, I knew that leaving the Valley was a factor worthy of consideration. Coming from a migrant family, I knew that deciding wouldn’t just solely affect me. I had a conversation with my family, and that is when I realized that UTRGV was the best fit for me at that time and to this day. It offers a great education at an economic cost when compared to other universities. I received the opportunity to familiarize myself with the Edinburg campus through a summer migrant camp called MUSE. Through MUSE, I was introduced to a snippet of that important feeling of belongingness that is so significant to incoming freshmen. Most importantly, it meant I’d still be able to see my family since they migrate for six to seven months out of the year to other states.
