RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS—APRIL 4, 2017— Dr. Alejandro Bocanegra, a second-year resident in the Family Medicine residency program at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, has been named 2017 Resident of the Year by the National Hispanic Medical Association.

The award is given to medical residents “who have made a significant contribution to Hispanic health,” according to the association.

“We are thrilled to have one of our residents, Dr. Alejandro Bocanegra, receive the Resident of the Year Award from the National Hispanic Medical Association,” said Dr. Steven A. Lieberman, interim dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine. “This award signifies the high-caliber of our medical residents, as well as the exceptional quality of training our residency programs provide.

Bocanegra, who grew up in Cd. Acuña, Mexico, across the border from Del Rio, Texas, earned his bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas San Antonio in 2008 and his medical degree from Howard University in 2014.

He became a doctor because he wanted to help people who live in a medically underserved area.

“It was exciting to come back closer to home,” he said. “What I enjoy most is helping out the community and being an advocate for my patients.”

Bocanegra is expected to receive his award on May 6 at the association’s conference in Maryland. He said he is looking forward to attending the conference.

“I want to learn as much as I can so I can be a good doctor and bring new ideas back to the Valley and our program,” he said.
