RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – JULY 5, 2016 – While most people spent the Fourth of July grilling hot dogs, UTRGV kinesiology student Kassie Zapata ate 13.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the 2016 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island.

Zapata placed 10th among the 15 women who competed in the annual event, which celebrated its 100thanniversary this year and was shown on ESPN channels.

Zapata said she was not nervous at all going up against veteran competitive eaters, including defending champion Miki Sudo – who ate 38.5 hot dogs to claim the 2016 ladies’ championship belt.

“It was unbelievable,” Zapata said. “I had so much fun! I hope to keep doing it for a while.”
