UTRGV ROTC commissions three cadets at December ceremony

EDINBURG, TEXAS – JAN. 21, 2016 – Three cadets from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) were commissioned Dec. 18 during a ceremony held at the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre on the Edinburg campus.

This was UTRGV’s first ROTC commissioning ceremony, and was presided over by Lt. Col. Walter Llamas, UTRGV professor of military science. The cadets were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army at the ceremony attended by family, friends and university officials.

From left the commissioned cadets are:

  • 2nd Lt. Tyler A. Gomez (Army Active Duty), who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a minor in military science and went to Chemical Officer training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.;
  • 2nd Lt. Luis J. Hernandez (Reserves), who graduated with a Master of Social Work and headed to Quartermaster Officer training at Fort Lee, Va.; and
  • 2nd Lt. Raul Rosales (Army National Guard), who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, minor in military science, and went to Infantry Officer training at Fort Benning, Ga.

There are currently more than 100 cadets in the university’s ROTC Vaqueros Battalion on both the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses.
