RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – JAN. 13, 2016 – Hoosier Daddy, UTRGV’s flag football team, finished second in the nation in the men’s division of the 2015 NIRSA National Flag Football Championships, held Jan. 2-4 at the University of West Florida in Pensacola.

In addition, player Mario Rios earned All-American honors in the men’s division.

The UTRGV team won the Region IV Championship at Texas A&M University in November to qualify for nationals. The team went 5-1 at nationals, losing 26-12 in the final to the defending national champion, Valdosta State University in Georgia.

Overall, UTRGV finished the season with a 26-3 record, said Robert Silvers, UTRGV’s Intramural and Sport Club coordinator.
“I’m really proud of these guys and how well they played,” he said.

Silvers said UTRGV’s legacy institution, The University of Texas-Pan American, won the national championship in 2007.

Rios, a Brownsville resident who graduated in December with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, said he was surprised to get the All-American designation, but was glad to have had this experience after playing for UTRGV and its legacy institution, UT Brownsville/Texas Southmost College, for years.

“It was a good experience for all of us,” said Rios, who enjoyed meeting and playing with team members from the Edinburg Campus. “We’re really proud of each other and putting UTRGV on the map.”

Many of the players from the Hoosier Daddy team have graduated now, but UTRGV has another team – the Aztecs – which includes some of the Hoosier Daddy members who are still in school.

“And that team has a good shot of returning to the national championship games next year,” he said. “They won the Valley Bowl this year. UTRGV should have another winning team.”
