Message from the President

February 15, 2018

As stated in my December 5, 2017 campus message, the SACSCOC Board confirmed that UTRGV successfully addressed all concerns cited in its probationary letter of January 11, 2017. At its December 2017 annual meeting, the SACSCOC Board continued UTRGV on probation for Federal Requirement 4.7, a standard not originally cited in the January 11, 2017 letter.

We are pleased to report that the SACSCOC Board announced today that UTRGV has successfully addressed the concerns cited in its probationary letter of January 11, 2017. UTRGV remains accredited and the academic and administrative operations of the institution will continue as they have in the past. However, UTRGV remains on probationary status pending a SACSCOC review of the Statewide Single Audit for FY 2017 conducted by the Texas State Auditor’s Office; the audit report is scheduled to be released in February 2018. The SACSCOC Board is scheduled to review the results of the audit and UTRGV’s resolution of any findings at the December 2018 annual meeting.

As shared in my October 6, 2017 message, we welcomed a SACSCOC special committee of our peers to campus earlier this week. Since January, we have worked with the campus community to address each of the concerns expressed in the official letter from SACSCOC, with our SACSCOC Vice President advising us throughout the process. Our goal and that of SACSCOC has been to ensure that each concern is addressed completely and to ensure that policies and processes are in place to ensure future compliance with the Commission standards. We prepared diligently for this visit and deeply appreciate the hard work and support of all of you throughout this year.

As shared in my January 19, 2017, letter to the campus community, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was notified in December 2016, that we were being placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The probation is for a period of 12 months and will require SACSCOC Board action during its December 2017 meeting. As we previously reported, the specific concerns are related to the complexity of the transition that involved the separation of UTB/TSC, the separate accreditation of TSC, the rename of UTPA, and the closure of UTB once TSC received separate accreditation. It is hard to overstate the complexity of this process.

As you know, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was notified in December, 2016, that we were being placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The probation will be for a period of 12 months and will require SACSCOC Board action during its December, 2017 meeting. We are confident that the Board action next December will be positive for reasons we point out below.
