Step #1: Submit a UTRGV Graduate Application at www.utrgv.edu/gradapply. There is no application fee.

Step #2: Request your official transcripts to be sent electronically to gradapps@utrgv.edu or mailed to:

*Please Note: If you are a graduate of UTPA, UTB/TSC, or UTRGV you do not need to request an official transcript to be sent to the Graduate College.
 

Review and submit all Program Requirements:

  • Clear admission to the UTRGV Graduate College.
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a recognized international equivalent in a similar or related field.
  • Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Official transcripts from each institution attended (must be submitted directly to UTRGV).
  • Three letters of recommendation from professional or academic sources using this required Reference Form.
  • Verified successful completion of a course in basic statistics. 
  • Personal statement detailing professional goals and reasons for pursuing the graduate degree. (See below for instruction)

Instruction for Personal Statement: Addressing each of the following statements, prepare an essay of approximately 1,000 words discussing your interest in social work. This essay should be typewritten, double spaced, and should contain few if any, spelling or grammatical errors. Please include your name on the cover letter. Organize your essay using the following headings, but complete Part III only if it is applicable to you.

  • Part I:
    • Why are you seeking a graduate degree in social work at this time?
    • Explain why you chose your microconcentration in family focused practicewith Latinosormacroadministration andcommunity practice concentration to focus on for your advanced year studies.
    • What specific career goals and aspirations do you have following your graduation from the Master of Science in Social Work Program at University of Texas –Rio Grande Valley?
    • Why have you chosen to apply to University of Texas –Rio Grande Valley, Department of Social Work to pursue a master’s degree in social work?
  • Part II:
    • Discuss the personal, vocational, and educational experiences you have had which have helped you define your choice of social work as a field of graduate study. Include a description of relevant human services practice experience.
    • Examine your personal strengths and limitations. Explain how your personal characteristics support, inhibit, and generally influence your ability to pursue graduate study and to establish a professional career in social work.
  • Part III:
    • Briefly identifyand discuss any special circumstances that you believe the MSSW Admissions Committee should consider in evaluating your application. (Examples: military service;single head of household; primary caretaker forafamily member with disability; special abilities) Your discussion of specialcircumstancesshould reflectyour ability to overcome obstacles or your potential to succeed in the MSSW program.

Additional requirements for domestic applicants who attended foreign universities and international applicants:

  • TOEFL or IELTS Language Proficiency Test with minimum scores: 550 on paper-based, 213 on computer based, or 79 on Internet-based for the TOEFL; 6.5 for the IELTS.   • Certified English translation of educational records.

*Students in fully online programs are not eligible for I-20 or student visas however international applicants can study from their home country.
