Chair's Welcome

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley/ University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy Cooperative Pharmacy Program

Thank you for seeking information about the Cooperative Pharmacy Program (CPP).  Our unique program reaps the immeasurable benefits of both cooperating campuses.  In 2001,  the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American) and The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy had the wisdom and foresight to merge their resources to provide opportunities for the talented students in the Rio Grande Valley to attend one of the leading institutions of pharmacy education in the nation.  The goal of the program includes building a premier pharmacy workforce for South Texas that understands the language and culture of the community. Students are able to begin their course of study close to home before matriculating to the Austin campus for their first two professional years.  The final two professional years are completed on the UTRGV campus.

In October of 2013, Exelencia in Education named the CPP as America’s top program for increasing achievement for Latino students at the graduate level.  UT Pan American's Cooperative Pharmacy Program was selected from among 165 programs and 22 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Conceived and run by Exelenica in Education, this is the only national initiative to systematically identify, recognize and catalogue evidence-based programs that improve Latino college success.  The program has a 100% pass rate for National Boards and State Boards over the past four years and over 80% of the CPP alumni work in the community.  Our outstanding faculty’s investigation endeavors have created opportunities for student research and national presentation experiences at both undergraduate and graduate levels.  The Excelencia award was confirmation that the program is fulfilling its mission.

The advent of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and up and coming School of Medicine will provide our students boundless opportunities for inter-professional education that will strengthen future healthcare teams in our community.  Interdisciplinary research and practice collaborations opportunities are already in place at both faculty and student levels.  The field of pharmacy is growing and our program will keep developing to provide the education that our students need to become leaders in the profession that will inspire the world.

Thank you,
