    UNDERGRADUATE PERFORMANCE MAJOR

    • Two contrasting works or two contrasting movements of works from the standard cello repertoire (UIL class solo I or comparable)
    • One Etude or additional solo piece that shows applicant's technical and musical strengths
    • Two three or four octave major & minor scales and arpeggios

    Memorization is preferred but not required.


    UNDERGRADUATE MUSIC EDUCATION MAJOR - CELLO CONCENTRATION

    • Two contrasting works or two contrasting movements of works from the standard cello repertoire (UIL class I solo preferred, class II solos can be acceptable). One of the works may be an etude.
    • Two three octave major & minor scales and arpeggios

    Memorization is not required.


    GRADUATE

    • First movement of a standard cello concerto
    • One movement from a standard cello sonata (contrasting in style from the concerto)
    • Two contrasting movements from any Bach cello suite
    • Two three or four octave major & minor scales and arpeggios
    • The concerto movement and/or Bach should be performed by memory

    UNDERGRADUATE CLARINET MAJOR

    Performance and Music Education

    Two works contrasting in style (period, tempo) from the standard repertoire or two contrasting movements from sonata/concerto repertoire. One of the selections may be an etude. Accompaniment is not required. Memorization is not required. While it is not mandatory to play a Class 1 solo, certainly a more challenging solo, if well played, will create a better impression than a simpler solo.

    All major scales three octaves if possible. Chromatic scale through the full range of the instrument.


    MASTER OF MUSIC CLARINET AUDITION

    Two contrasting movements from a major sonata/concerto (eg Brahms, Mozart, Poulenc, Nielsen, Copland). If you are uncertain about the appropriateness of a selection, please contact Dr. O’Neil well in advance lorne.oneil@utrgv.edu.

    All major and melodic minor scales in three octaves if possible, taken at a good tempo to demonstrate technical capability. Chromatic scale, full range.

    Sight reading may be asked at either undergraduate or graduate level level.

    • Two contrasting movements from a standard double bass concerto or sonata;
    • One étude or additional solo piece that shows applicant's technical and musical strengths;
    • Two two-octave major scales and corresponding arpeggios (three octave scales are optional and encouraged).

    Memorization is not required but is preferred.


    UNDERGRADUATE MUSIC EDUCATION MAJOR - DOUBLE BASS CONCENTRATION

    • Two contrasting works or movements of the applicant's choice from the standard double bass repertoire;
    • Two two-octave major scales & two three-octave minor scales, and corresponding arpeggios.

    Memorization is not required.


    MUSIC MINOR - DOUBLE BASS CONCENTRATION

    • Two contrasting works or movements of the applicant's choice from the standard double bass repertoire;
    • One two-octave major scale and corresponding arpeggio.

    Memorization is not required.


    MASTER OF MUSIC - DOUBLE BASS CONCENTRATION

    • Two contrasting movements from a standard double bass concerto (e.g. Bottesini, Dittersdorf, Koussevitsky, etc.) or from a major Sonata (eg. Misek, Arpeggione, Brahms, etc);
    • Two contrasting movements from one or more Bach Cello Suites;
    • Two orchestral excerpts from the standard orchestral literature (e.g. Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss, etc.);
    • Two three-octave major scales & two three-octave minor scales, and corresponding arpeggios.

    At least the concerto, sonata or Bach should be performed by memory.

    MASTER OF MUSIC - FLUTE CONCENTRATION

    • Two contrasting movements from a standard flute concerto (e.g. Mozart, Ibert, Nielsen, etc.);
    • Two contrasting movements from one or more Bach Sonatas;
    • Two orchestral excerpts from the standard orchestral literature (e.g. Debussy, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, etc.);
    • Two three-octave major scales & two three-octave minor scales, and corresponding arpeggios.

    UNDERGRADUATE APPLIED MUSIC- GUITAR PERFORMANCE

    1.      A minimum 15 minutes of concert-level solo repertoire consisting of varied stylistic periods and requiring advanced technique. All of the pieces must be memorized. Examples include: Bach Lute Suite or Violin Partita movements, A classical sonata or large theme and variations, Multi-movement “Spanish sonata” from the mid-20th century,  A large work in the post-1960 modern style. Candidates must choose works from diverse eras like: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, 20th century Spanish, post 1960.


    2.      Technical Exercises: scales, slurs, arpeggios, etc. 


    3.      Reading

    You will be asked to play music from a written score (including upper fretboard positions) that will contain accidentals, multiple rhythms and expressive markings (dynamics, etc.).

    UNDERGRADUATE MUSIC EDUCATION MAJOR - GUITAR CONCENTRATION

    1.      10 minutes of memorized solo repertoire- All of the pieces must be memorized. It is strongly recommended that students choose works similar to the following: F. Carulli, Studies; M. Carcassi, Studies Op. 60 (no’s: I, 2, 3, 7, 9, 14,19); L. Brouwer, Simple Studies (vols. III, IV); F. Tarrega, Studies; F. Sor Studies (5, 6, 9); H. Villa-Lobos Preludes 3, 4, 1, Etudes 1, 8.

    3.      Sight Reading - You will be asked to play music (not fast!) from a written score in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th positions.

    UNDERGRADUATE

    Applicants are recommended to audition on alto or tenor saxophone

    UNDERGRADUATE MUSIC EDUCATION - SAXOPHONE MAJOR

    • Two contrasting movements from a standard saxophone solo (preferably “grade I”) from the TMEA UIL PML list (works of suggested composers: Heiden, Maurice, Bozza, Creston, Milhaud, Singelee, Schmidt, Hartley, etc.)
    • All major scales 2 octaves (although preferably performed full range) and corresponding arpeggios – from memory. Recommendation: prepare varying articulations and at a tempo of two eighth notes = 100

    Memorization is not required.

    Undergraduate Applied (Performance) - Saxophone Major
    Recommended to audition on alto or tenor

    • Two contrasting movements from a standard (preferable original) saxophone concerto or sonata (works of suggested composers: Bozza, Heiden, Ibert, Creston, Milhaud, Dubois, Tull, Villa-Lobos, Di Pascuale, Schmidt, Hartley etc. or equivalent grade I solo from the TMEA UIL PML list)
    • One étude or additional solo piece that shows applicant's technical and musical strengths (possibly from the 48 Etudes after Ferling or Voxman Selected Studies). This may be contrasting piece demonstrating contemporary/extended techniques or facility in the jazz idiom.
    • All full range major scales and arpeggios from memory. Recommendation: prepare varying articulations and at a tempo of two eighth notes = 120

    Memorization of the concerto is not required but is preferred.


    GRADUATE

    MASTER OF MUSIC – SAXOPHONE PERFORMANCE

    • Two contrasting movements from a standard original saxophone concerto or sonata (works of suggested composers: Muczynski, Desenclos, Creston, Dubois, Glazunov, Ibert, Bonneau… etc)
    • One étude or additional solo piece that shows applicant's technical and musical strengths. It is recommended that this be a contrasting piece demonstrating contemporary/extended techniques (works of suggested composers: Noda, Lauba, Caravan, etc) or facility in the jazz idiom.
    • All major & minor scales played full range and corresponding arpeggios from memory. Recommendation: prepare varying articulations and at a tempo of four sixteenth notes = 100

    The concerto movements should be performed by memory.

              a.       One selection in English

              b.      One selection in Italian, German, French, or Latin

    2.       Take a sight-singing and aural skills assessment.

    Audition for Bachelor of Music (Mus Ed and Performance) – Transfer Student

    1.       Perform three classical pieces from memory:

              a.       One selection in English

              b.      One selection in Italian, German, French, or Latin

              c.       One additional piece in any language

    2.       Take a sight-singing and aural skills assessment.

    Audition for Minor in Music (Voice Concentration)

    1.       Perform two classical pieces from memory (selections from the UIL Solo and Ensemble PML would be appropriate choices):

              a.       One selection in English

              b.      One selection in Italian, German, French, or Latin

    2.       Take a sight-singing and aural skills assessment.

    An accompanist will be provided for your audition. Please bring a clean copy of your music for the pianist (It is not necessary to bring a copy of your music for the audition panel). Please feel free to contact me or other members of the voice faculty if you have questions about appropriate repertoire.


    GRADUATE VOICE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

    Audition for the MM in Vocal Performance

    Audition Repertoire: Prepare five selections, including three art songs and at least one aria (opera or oratorio), representing a variety of musical periods and classical styles. Repertoire should include (but is not limited to) selections in English, French, German, and Italian.

    • All selections must be performed from memory
    • An accompanist will be provided if needed.
