El Retorno

Brief History of the Event: “El Retorno: El Valle Celebra Nuestra Gloria” began at UTPA in 2008 and continues at UTRGV. The annual event was inspired by grassroots community-based efforts in the Rio Grande Valley to honor Anzaldúa via the Gloria Anzaldúa Legacy (GAL) Project founded by community poets and the (international) Society for the Study of Gloria Anzaldúa (SSGA) based in San Antonio.

SSGA founder Norma E. Cantú was the first invited presenter in 2008. Over the years, other featured presenters include Norma Alarcón, Aída Hurtado, Carmen Tafolla, Inés Hernández-Avila, Sonia Saldívar, ire’ne lara silva, and Smadar Lavie. Many local poets and artists influenced by Anzaldúa have also featured their work at this event, including the performance group WAKE-UP, Amalia Ortiz, Verónica “Lady Mariposa” Sandoval, Celeste De Luna, Beatriz Guzmán Velásquez, and many others.
