Report Phishing Messages

If you receive a phishing message that is not flagged with the warning below, follow the steps provided to promptly report it to the IT Service Desk.

WARNING: The UTRGV spam filter has detected that this message includes a link or keywords that are SOMETIMES used by “phishers”. Do not enter your UTRGV username and password on any web form linked from this email message unless you are certain that this message is legitimate. Thank you.

To report phishing messages:

  1. Log in to my.utrgv.edu.
  2. Click the ServiceNow icon under Applications.
  3. Click Something broken? under Need help.
  4. Select the name of person making the request under Open on behalf of this user.
    • Note: Your name is the default. If you are submitting a request on behalf of someone else, click the magnifying glass search icon to search for their name. Verify the user you selected is correct by hovering the mouse pointer over the User Information icon.
  5. Enter the Contact Number of the person making the request where they can be contacted directly for follow-up.
  6. Enter the building and room number, Bldg./Rm.
    • Note: This information is necessary to ensure technician is dispatched to the correct location.
  7. Select Impact.
    • Note: Set to Low = 1 to 9 users.
  8. For Short Description, enter Phishing Message.
    • Note: This is the title of the incident. For example: "My email is not working."
  9. Enter the following under Please describe your issue in further detail below.
    1. Date and time when message was received.
    2. Subject (Exact wording used in the Subject Line by the phishing message.)
    3. Sender's Email Address (Exact email address used by the sender, if available.).
  10. Click on the paperclip icon to attach items such as the message itself, or include any information about the message that will assist the IT Service Desk in expediting your request (e.g., screen shots, files, etc.).
  11. Click Submit.
    • Note: Once we receive your request, corrective action will be taken to prevent similar attempts and warning notifications will be sent to other individuals who may have received the same phishing message.

Action Steps

If you receive an email that you suspect may be a phishing message:

  • Report it.
  • Do not click on any links within the message.
  • Do not download any attachments.
  • Do not reply.
  • Delete it.

If you have fallen victim to a phishing attack and have confirmed or provided your Personal Identifiable Information (PII), such as username and password, be sure to change the password to your UTRGV account. Remember to also change passwords to any external services where you may have used the compromised information.
